Critique: This film has some truly amusing points such as the quick thinking circus proprietor and the psychotherapy session. The mix with camp aspects is done nicely after the deadly serious mood of part one. The camp stuff doesn't detract too much from the pace of the film. The freaks are not particularly well done, suffering as much as anything else from too much direct lighting. Even the best monster will succumb to such. Belyle himself isn't too bad As wizened Kevin Van Hentenryk
Plot Summary: Reports on television detail Dwayne's falling out of the window at the end of part one. Both the monster and Dwayne were injured in the fall but both survived. B-case's eyes glow and Dwayne, held in the next room, awakens. B-case breaks out of a chain that holds him and Duane disengages himself from his IV. The security guard goes in to check and he is unceremoniously eliminated by Belyle. Dwayne puts Belyle in a hamper and rolls him out of the hospital. Two women who claim to have known their Aunt meet them at the door of the hospital in a van and they make their escape. The women introduce themselves as granny Ruth and Susan. Granny Ruth Smoller tells Belyle that she and their aunt spoke often. She says there are others like him who have stayed with her as well. She brings him a basket to make him feel comfortable and Belyle is then brought to meet the others, a hideous group of deformities who live up in the attic. Lorenzo is just a big head but also an accomplished opera singer. This scene has a nice absurdity to it. The withdrawn Eve is a basket case just like Belyle. At Judge and Jury, America's bravest newspaper, a seedy tabloid, they want to do an anniversary special on the twins. The editor suggests that Louise Smaller had a freak commune. He tells Marcy Elliot to hunt her up. She calls a guy who says he has a mermaid and a new monster. Before Marcy gets there, however, coincidentally grandma Ruth shows up. He has a little circus, and within, however, is just a huckster. He says the Bradley monster died and its skeleton is in his case. Ruth notes that the skeleton is too large to have fit in a basket. Without skipping a beat, the huckster retorts that it was acromegali: it got bigger before it died. She notes that he is an exploiter and brings in a basket, suggesting that he owes Mr. Bradley and apology. When Marcy arrives, the proprietor is in rough shape, having become a monstrosity himself. Marcy and Artie try to work up an angle. Ruth has a psychotherapy session going with Belyle. She notes that although he is bitter, ripping the faces off people may not be in his best interest. THe restless Duane tries to get Susan to run off with him but she says that they belong here. Dwayne is bitter about living in a house of freaks. He keeps recalling the operation. He tells Ruth he'd be leaving soon. He goes to tell Belyle. As he passes by he hears one of the monsters muttering "I'm getting better every day and every way." He tells Belyle about his wanting to get away and his desire to take Susan with him. Belyle only laughs. Marcy arrives at the mansion. Ruth tells Marcy that she finds her contemptible and that she no longer has anything to do with unique individuals. Just then Duane blunders in the door, basket in hand. Marcy decides to forget about Lou and try for People magazine. Ruth knows the gig is up and when they decide to fight she gleefully says it's going to be like old times. She gives an overblown inspirational speech to the gathered monsters. She realizes some of them are philosophically opposed to violence, but for the others, she says "We fight!" The plan is simply to let them come. When Mary and Artie arrive, Ruth and Susan make a big show of clearing out in the van. Inside the house, Duane sets the trap by pretending to be on the phone telling someone about how "he" is sick up in the attic and can't move as Artie listens from the open window. Artie climbs through and after a staged conversation, Artie climbs up to the attic. He gets more of a scoop than he had hoped for. Marcy watches as the lights go dark and is very concerned. Phil calls and says he is someone who knows who they are. A meeting in a sleazy bar is arranged. Phil tries to seduce Duane by saying that he's in his brother's shadow. Unfortunately, the bar has been taken over by unique individuals. When it is agreed that the Dwayne and Phil are the only freaks there, it is agreed that the freak be taught a lesson. They get Marcy's address from his blood smeared wallet. Marcy gets some calls but the caller hangs up. Next she finds that her window is broken and her phone line's been cut. Dwayne notes that Belyle wants to grant her an interview. He could answer a few questions and then he could rip her face off. She gets hold of a carving knife, but Dwayne keeps up a banter as her face is indeed ripped off, it appears she can join the group if she so chooses. Over a picnic, Susan and granny are still concerned about Duane. Beyle and Eve seem to have fallen in love and Susan and Duane have too. Susan tries to explain Duane that there's something strange about her as well. Duane does not deal with it well. She goes out the window. Granny puts out the call to find Dwayne. Dwayne then decides to fix things between him and Dwayne. He sews them together again.
