Critique: Too many good actors for a slasher? Relax, they weren't yet famous, and this director directed A Christmas Story! The foreshortening of the intruder's view leads us to believe there is something very wrong. The moaning phone calls are pretty scary. The murderer's mad scenes are pretty effective. Interesting music. Nice subjective camera angles. Generally a pretty good pace. Good production values. There are definitely suspenseful moments here. But what's with that ending? Are we supposed to think it wasn't you know who? Despite the questions, another solid Bob Clarke effort, the likes of which include the outstanding family film "A Christmas Story" and the less outstanding and less family-oriented "Porky's". Made before "When a Stranger Calls" and the slew of sorority house slashers and Christmas slashers that followed it, "Black Christmas" stands out alone for originality. In that the first nvictim was the virginal Claire, this film is a good epochal marker. After the influence of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Virgins usually rule the day.

Plot Summary: Something is awry in this Christmas picture. Someone is looking in on the festivities at the sorority from the outside. A trellis is scaled and it looks as though there's an uninvited reveler. A phone call is received from the "moaner" and everyone listens as he grunts and cackles over the phone. They are fascinated by this, although his last words are "I'm going to kill you." Barb is not bothered. The intruder watches "the professional virgin, Claire, and begins meowing. She goes into the closet to investigate. It seems virgins are the first to go in this one. The foul mouthed house mother drinks a bit. She shows Claire's prudish father, Mr. Harrison, around as he searches for the missing Claire. Jesse's boyfriend flunks his wild piano final and later smashes his piano. Drunken Barb regales Mr. Harrison with stories of copulating turtles. A manhunt ensues for Claire and a missing thirteen year old. The house mother, Mrs. Mack, hears some meowing from the attic. Jesse arrives and gets another call. Peter comes down the stairs at the sorority--he says he had been sleeping. Peter says Jesse is going to be very sorry about having an abortion. The connection between the caller and Claire's being missing leads a tap to be made on the phone. The house mother's phone has a separate number. The jabberer descends once again from the attic. Barb wakes unable to breathe, it appears it's all right. As Jesse listens to carolers, Barb gets a new reason to have breathing problems. Soon there's a call and Jesse suddenly knows who it is, though she tells the cop she doesn't know. Just then Jesse realizes that Peter was in the house sleeping when she received one of the calls so it couldn't be him. Soon Phyll has disappeared as well as the tension builds for the finale.
