Critique: Extremely poor acting. Poor Production Values. The discussions between Chris and the detective are incredibly poorly acted. This Devil is one of the worst monsters in horror movie history. A truly ridiculous Halloween costume Satan and a cheap ending to boot. We get Chris in freeze frame as he sees the horrifying devil and some acolytes. Students and connoisseurs of poor acrting and cheap effects should be required to see this. Although it may be true (in many states) that you can't arrest anyone for devil worshiping, how about the severed head? Dahmer was arrested in Illinois for having one.

Plot Summary: A woman wakes up and is told she is in Pleasant Hill Hospital. She seems to think that Dr. Nolan is her doctor. Dr. Specter is her new doctor. When she insists on seeing doctor Nolan, Martine, the head nurse, orders her sedated by attendants. This is all extremely clumsily done. She sees convalescents outside but calling to them from behind her window doesn't help. It appears she's trapped. A Doctor arrives and asks miss Martin who she's yelling to. She gets little in the way of answers from him. The patients, a blind woman, a handicapped woman and a mute, seem to have confidence in doctor Specter. There are strange hooded people in wheelchairs at the other tables. She goes to help one who falls out of her chair and sees that her hand is green and corroded. She hears some chanting and investigates but is stopped by an attendant. That night she dream of pushing a smiling doctor down an elevator shaft. The pudgy Chris calls someone about Lucinia, and hears she was transferred to another hospital. He hops in his sportscar and heads to the supposed hospital. Miss Martin finally meets the debonair, goteed, Dr. Specter. He says she had a breakdown. He also says he is a devotee of her music. She doesn't believe it. When she insists on leaving, Dr. Specter insists on an examination. Miss Marin is given an examination, which appears to be just her getting undressed as someone watches through a peep hole and a bath by Marine, the masculine appearing head nurse. Chris arrives asking to visit Lucinia. He is surprised to hear that there are no visiting hours. Chris is surprised to hear that Lucinia is in danger of a relapse. Lucinia had seen Chris below and is angry that she hadn't been allowed to see him. Specter lies, saying that Chris had been understanding. Chris goes to see Dr. Nolan. Nolan knows about no asylum. Nolan says that it wasn't his decision, but her father had called and had insisted on the arrangements. Nolan says her father died when she was twelve years old. Nolan claims that Specter is an expert on the physiology of pain--he'd been active ten or fifteen years before. Nolan thinks he'd retired. He had been in his seventies then. Chris is now quite confused because Specter had hardly been middle aged. The crippled woman is put in a room and told she would receive her final treatment. Soon steam starts to fill the chamber and bugs crawl over her. Chris goes to see detective Walsh and says she was kidnapped. After some bad acting, they head off to Pleasant Hills. The gates don't look as though they've been opened in years. Detective Walsh is pretty skeptical, but they trudge up to the house. It looks pretty abandoned. Specter shows up pretending he's a groundskeeper and says no one has been here for years. When Chris attacks Specter, the detective grapples with him and hauls him off. Later a man is approached by hooded men with torches who bring their torches down over him and set him aflame. Lucinia hears some rocking at night and goes up to investigate she finds an empty rocker but a man with a gouged out eye and green teeth comes grappling after her and she flees. She finds a certificate that says Dr. Specter got his license in 1803. Then Specter comes to him and grapples with her. When she says to Martine that she had gone upstairs, Martine says she had checked on her. She was only dreaming. The blind girl is led to a pool and water snakes are released. They attacker and we get a cheap snake kill in the pool. Chris leaves Walsh's office but not before he produces some more lame lines. He does seem to think there might be something to the case. He calls someone in to make a routine check. Specter tells miss Martin that she will be leaving in the morning as long as a few routine tests go all right. Meanwhile, Chris sneaks up on the institution again. Chris finds a severed head at the hospital and brings it back to Walsh. Specter was arrested for devil worshiping. In spite of the severed head, the detective resists bothering the doctor. You can't arrest anyone for devil worshiping. Finally the detective agrees that there might be something to the story. Specter's at the organ again. He is weak--he hasn't much longer. Amidst chanting and pentagrams, they bring Miss Martin into the cellar and put her bound and gagged on a slab and Martine summons the devil, blathering on far too long. Martine pulls off her mask and it turns out she's Dr. Specter. The police are on the way. But the devil has arrived! A doctor shows up and it looks like an operation will proceed. But the devil says he's been deceived. The cheap devil thinks she's impure. Specter is smoked away. These are crummy special effects. The police arrive to find the burned body of Specter and his acolytes, but Lucinia is still alive. The devil's last act seems to have been to change Lucinia from her sacrificial whites to her street clothes. Chris is in for a surprise when he bumps into the devil and his acolytes.
