Critique: Some of the dialogue is too preachy. Maybe it was all that time chatting with shrinks in the mental hospital, but Norman seems a bit too self aware. Still, Norman's stiff nervous ticks remain a hit. The relationship with Maureen is quite engaging. We do so want Norman to get on. He really is a pretty good guy. The new revelations about Norman's heritage will make your head spin. The bit with the cop sucking on bloody ice and licking his fingers is memorable. Some of the direction and camera angles are just a bit too staged. In addition, Norman's little veiled quips don't work particularly well. He's just not the quipster type.
Plot Summary: Sister Maureen is atop the bell tower. She cries out there is no God. A sister grabs for her and falls to her death. Maureen leaves the order and hitch hikes away. Maureen is picked up by Duke who's headed for California to be a rock n roll star. It starts raining too hard and Duke pulls over for the night. In the middle of the night, Duke can't keep his hands to himself and Maureen stumbles out into the rain. Back at the Bates motel, Norman is keeping up with his hobby as birds are falling dead from the feeder. Norman recalls finishing off his real mother, Emma Spool, in the kitchen. she's reported missing in the paper. Duke rolls in to the Bates motel and and gets a job. A reporter, Tracy, shows up at the diner wanting to interview Norman. The reporter is doing a piece on the insanity defense. Norman watches the blonde Maureen arrive at the diner and recalls the shower scene. Norman's had about enough and leaves the diner. Maureen shows up exhausted at the motel and has just about had it when she sees that Duke works there. She decides to take it. Norman is agitated when Duke gives her room one. That night Duke drops into the bar and meets the reporter who is elated to find that he works at the Bates. Norman's staring through the peep hole to room one again. It looks like mother's up and wandering again. When ma comes in for a reenactment of nineteen sixty five when she sees that Maureen has beat her to the punch by slitting her wrists. At the hospital, the reporter is skeptical about Norman's claim that he was bringing by towels. Norman offers that she can stay FOC. When Norman meets Duke's pickup, Myrna, she offers that he join the party. He suggests maybe later when she walks away seductively. After Duke throws her out of the apartment in only her underwear, we soon hear "Mother! Mother! The blood!'. The next day, Duke thinks it's odd that the five dollar bill he gave the girl has shown up in the register. The reporter is told by Norman not to show up again. The reporter comes around miss Spool's place asking about her. She finds a telephone number and it turns out to be the Bates motel. Norman definitely has an eye on the conservative Maureen. They have a lovely time out at a restaurant. When they get back to the motel, the wine seems to have gotten to them. However, they fall asleep and Norman leaves. Soon we hear "You dirty dirty boy". Just as Norman is reaching for the knife, Maureen shows up. Norman tells her to go back to her room and lock the door. Good idea as mother starts doing her thing with the party crowd gathered for the football game. The next day the cops show up looking for a missing reveler. It's a close call when the cop absentmindedly eats some ice with blood on it. The fun's not over though as Duke has snatched mother. His extortion attempt doesn't go well as Norman gets the best of him. Meanwhile, the reporter tracks down Mrs. Spool's old boss and he tells her that Spool had been in an asylum and had killed her husband. As usual, Norman's got to clean up the mess that mother's left him. Duke tries for a comeback, but it falls short. Maureen has really fallen for Norman and when he comes back from his cleanup job she goes up to the big house. Unfortunately, mother causes another mishap. The reporter comes around looking for Maureen. She finds Maureen set up with candles. The reporter explains that Mrs. Spool was not really Norman's mother--she was his aunt and jealous. She kills her husband for having a child with Norman's mother.
