Critique: The interactions between the Frelings are still fun to watch. More scary effects, zombies Robbies jam with his braces, the scary voices and the suprises keep coming. Plenty of chills in this one too. The variations on Cain's southern spiritual haunt the movie like the ghosts the Frelands. The overall the score is a winner. The image of Kane trying to talk his way into their home is a memorable one as Julian Beck has portrayed a truly scary movie monster in Kane, with his ingratiating way and eerie smile and no special effects. The vomit creature is scary in large part because it makes sense in the context of Steven's having let down his guard by drinking the bottle of tequila, swollowing the worm and thereby letting Cain into the house and into his body. The secenes in the cavern and the other dimension is scary. The backdrop of Kane's early ninteenth century religious sect also ground the action in a nice mythology. There are not extensive other dimension scenes stretching the viewer's patience which is all to the good. The large assemblage of good spirits may seem overkill, but good acting on all fronts brings this off without a problem.
Plot Summary: The Native American shaman Taylor invokes an indian spirit at a prarie campfire. He stands and a breathes in spirit smoke. A spear is pointed at him by the old magician. Taylor drives his pickup into a suburban neighborhood, and he seems to have memories of part one. The Tangina is in the swimming pool pit. She has found a presence. The idian climbs down into the excavation. There are skelletal remains there. He says he has seen what he sees there in dreams and asks avout the family. We cut to a picnic with the Frelings. Grandma notices that the girl can find the right color yarn she asks for without looking. Carol Anne is drawing. The grandmother type admits that when she was the girl's age she knew things like where a lost bracelet was without being able to explain why. The girl admits she can do things too. The Frelings are having trouble recouping the insurance for the house. Mother is distracted at shopping and a dark minister type follows the little girl walking right through people. He asks if she is lost and suggests she come with him. Mother finally realizes that Carol Anne is gone. Grandmother is interested in fostering Carol Anne's gift. Mother is naturally quite suspicious of such things. Carol Anne gets a call from Grandma on her toy phone. The next morning grandma is dead. Bad dreams are starting for Diane (pulled into the ground by cadavers). Carol Anne gets a call on her phone. At first she thinks it's granma. Pretty soon astral lights and fell winds start up again. Carol-Anne says 'they're back'. Taylor shows up. Tangina Baron sent him. He says there's no use running and that he'll find them. The family leaves anyway and regroups at a redneck cafe where a woman is possessed by grandma who tells them to stick together and fight the evil. Taylor isx waiting and checks the house with the family golden retriever. The Freland's initial mistrust of Talylor is overcome by his wisdom "God is in his holy temple,"--Reverend Henry Cain visits the Freland home and scares everyone half to death with his creepy song and manners, Cain warns them that Taylor is a dangerous charlatan At the same time mother has a vision of Kane covered with dirt while Kane tells dad that he fears hes not man enough to hold this family together. Im your friend, let me in. CarolAnn's voice interupts them just as he was about to trust him as cain walks he vanishes. Taylor tells dad he comes in many forms but that was him. We must prepare. Taylor's lesson that although he may guide them they are in the end responsible for their own spiritual safety. Kane now a soul is evil and chooses not to see the light and move on. The spirit hates the frelands because he knows the love is their strength. He needs to pull them apart to take Carol Ann. Taylor tales him to a sweat lodge to soak in the nature of the opponent. It shows itself to Steven, an advantage to the good guys. Tangina arrives with news of a tomb full of bodies beneath the swimming pool of the old freland home and the theory that it may be a lost religious sect that mysteriously disappeared.. No marked graves. A mediunm led his followers to Californisa at the beginning iof the 18th century to start an utopian society. Tangina brings a photo along and has shown it to mom, its the reverend. Tangina pushes mom to open up her own powers and she sees what happened: Cain brings his sect into a cavern, where they are to await the end of the world. When the end doesn't come he won't let them go and he still hasn't. Steven's drinking tequila and things are starting to look a bit odd. Ghosts are rising all around the house. The worm in Steven's tequila doesn't go down very well. Swollowing it makes him posessed by Kane. He starts up the song. He pursues Diane. He says that she thought about how it would have been vetter if Carol Anne hadn't been born. She tells him she loves him and suddenly Steven begins to retch. A long horrifying wormbeing heaves out of him and slithers under the throat. The skelletal legless beast squirms out of the room. The monster grows into a huge lobster thing. He blows out spirit smoke and the being is sent into the other dimension. Robbie and Caorl Anne have come up missing. Robbie is found but Corol Anne is still missing.
