Critique: Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg combine here for one of the wildest rides in modern movie history, wholesome and horrifying, as mixing the aforenamed elements would lead one to expect. Top flight everything, shocking special effects, and the feel for generating scares that really only Tobe Hooper has consistently achieved since The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Nice foreshadowing when the diggers dig up the dead Tweedybird. Grave disturbers everywhere. Watch the older daughter get bagged when it turns out she knows about the holiday inn on I94. The opening scenes between the daughter and the TV people are classics culminating in Carol Ann's now classic movie moment pronouncement "They're here!" Zelda Rubinstein is great as the medium as is the entire cast. The "beast" is a plus for a change and Diane's ceiling crawl has been copied again and again. Hey for 10**********skulls we should list what we didn't like. Ugh, nothing.
Plot Summary: Cuesta Verde, California. The family's Golden Retriever awakens five year old Carol Anne from her sleep whereupon she goes down stairs and begings talking to the tv set. She shouts so loudly the entire family gathers around to listen as she answers the silent questions of the interviewer. During a lightning storm the old tree looks a bit scary. Up comes the natural anthem and Carol Anne's starting her somnambulism again, escept she dowsn't appear ro be asleep. A green misty hand comes out into the room, and now the house has a good shake. Carol Ann the produces the immortal line 'they're here.' Although they see the dammage, there's no report of the Earthquake on the radio. When mommy asks who she meant, Carol Anne reports it was the TV people. She then pomptly goes to the static on the TV. The Bobby's fork and spoon are all ben up. The golden retriever is agitated about something in the bedroom. Mommy turns her back for a moment, and she sees the charis set up on the kitchen table in an almost impossible balancing act. Carol Anne reports it's the TV people. When daddy gets home he is treated to a self sliding chair. Mommy thinks it's the greatest thing. That night in another storm Bobby is counting up the storm getting closer when the tree reaches through the window ad grabs him out. Carol Ann is having problems with fell winds and flying toys as well. Bobby is okay The family retuns but can't find Carol Ann. They try the swimming pool but its no dice. But then they hear her on the TV. The parapsychologist calims they'll be able to record any psychotronic energy. The claims of the parapsuychologist ring a bit hollow to the Freelingers. The hypothesis is a poltergaist haunting instead of a ormal hauntings. They switch to Carol Ann's static channel. Carol Ann is afraid of the light. The parapsychologist says its dangerous and she should avoid it. And then Carol Ann says something else is there with her and it doesn't look good. The question is how to get Carol Ann back out. Billy suggests tying a rope around someone and going in. One of the parapzcychologists has a bad moment as first his food ll of a sudden looks amggotty, and then his face starts to dissolve away. Fortunately it was all a dream. Next some beings form at the head of the stairs. The parapsychologists record the event. Questaverde was actually burial ground. The whole thing. Next they've brought in an extrapetit medium. She says Carol Ann is alive. Carol Ann was taken because she represents the Earthly pleasures. The beings on the other side are in a semi-conscious state. Carol Ann must help them to pass over. There is also something else in there keeping Carol Ann away from the spectral light. It is lying to her. To her it's just another child. To us it is the beast. Carol Ann is told to run to the light. She thinks it's bad. She's been lied to. They throw a few tennis balls in, and they come out at another point in the house. Then they throw a rope through. Mother goes though with a tether on and then a monster appears but they then yank out mother and daughter covered with a gooey afterbirth. Mother's a bit grey but she survived. The house is pronunced clean. So what happens? The Freelingers decide to move but they wait a day. Does that seem prudent? It looks like its not over as the clown that's been bother bothering him all along attacks. Meanwhile, mom's doing the ceiling crawl. When goo starts from the closet the house just doesn't look clean. The monster is back at the brink of the closet. Mother runs outside inthe rain for help but from the mud come the dead in the swimming pool. Good trick hallwayu, and the gaping maw of the beast presents itself. The family forms a human chain and are able to get out of the fell wind,. Sarcophogi are launching out of the ground all around. First daddy and then the real estate man show up. Daddy is less than pleased that he only moved the headstones, leaving the bodies below. When they show up at the Holiday Inn, the first move is to jettison the television set.
guns her down and then she shoots him as well.
