Critique: The killer here is the male reduced to his least attractive elements and although film is both suspenseful and scary, never abandoning it's bent on horror tone, his emasculation is a well-deserved riot. This movie lands ranked at the top of its genre. The direction and editing are top flight the surprises are everywhere. All the elements of the teenage horror, exploitation film, more breasts than there really are on earth, almost as much competition, teasing, and jealousy as there is on earth, and, of course, a psychopathic killer. The length (77 minutes) and pace (two attacks in the first 10 minutes) are the yardsticks by which all such films should be measured. This is a slasher, high on action and low on details, which, in a somewhat more aggressive tradition than Edgar Allen Poe, drives for this one effect. Interesting that this movie full of nude women and eventually slashed women, is one of the few of its genre driven by women in every way, The director, writer, producer, all protagonists, and eventual hero are women who rely on men only to deliver Pizza, or for sex, or dismemberment.
Plot Summary: The film centers around a clique of athletic girls and their mentor the clearly dykish gym teacher in an idyllic upper middle class California setting. So nice is their world that the parents in neighboring houses both take vacations/business trips simultaneously. Big Mistake. Newspapers and radio reports center on the escape of mass murderer of 5 Russ Thorn, believed to be still in the area. Whoever is behind this massacre business gets off to a fast start with a gigantic drill (presumably battery operated). The slumber party has scarcely begun when the lights go out. The fuse box is in the (gulp) garage. It isn't long before the girls know that their party is being picked off one by one by a homicidal maniac and he has them trapped in the house. The only handy help is the gym teacher, until the phone line is cut, and the neighbor girl, the new girl in town, whom they have so far mistreated. Things looks pretty bad. A battle down to the last woman/psycho ensues between the killer and all three elements. Who will survive the bloody slumber party massacre, good girls or bad guy?
