Critique: Despite Buddy's incessant pig-like grunting and occasional slapstick antics, "Slaughterhouse" manages to coopt enough of the features of its clear model "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2"-from the locale-through the small-businessman struggle to the fake "Timbuk-Three" music - to score as an anti-big business/displaced white craftsman lament-slasher with at times convincing gore-effects and a killer who is threatening despite himself. Like TCM2, "Slaughterhouse" views as the last gasp of rugged individualism and the entrepreneurial spirit. Particularly enjoyable are the anti-tax and anti-technology diatribes by bankrupt farmer Les Bacon, whose one-dimensional acting is strangely attractive. The rest of the cast is competent, the pace is brisk, and the film does a surprisingly good job at keeping the viewer off balance, at times toying with traditional horror movie order and teasing with situations and planted suspicions that are never fulfilled. The mischievous music at the beginning is an example of an often playful tone that does not get in the way of the gory business at hand. Filmed in Lakeside, California.
Plot Summary: Married Police Deputy Dave Thomas and girlfriend Sally Jean drive the cruiser to the point to make out where they see Skip Thompson's Jeep and Kevin Matthews' Mustang. There the teenagers scare the couple while rehearsing for loser's horror video. After they move on, two of the drinking, littering teens pair off to make out, while the others drive off to scare the couple some more. The make-out girl Michelle runs off to be chased by her stupid boyfriend, Kevin. During the chase, Kevin pauses to terrorize a cage full of pigs until a fat bearded redneck with a giant cleaver kills them both . At the slaughterhouse, pigs are methodically stunned, shaved and slaughtered. Friend and attorney Harold is warned by the Mr. S, the slaughterer, that they should sell the land where Les Bacon's pig farm was eight years ago. The Sheriff warns Skip that someday, he'll be scraping him off the highway. Skip picks up x and they nearly run over an old man as they pull out. They drive down slaughterhouse road to Lakeside.
The radio announces tonight's K-FAT pig-out dance at the V.F.W. sponsored by the radio station. "Bacon & Sons Hog Slaughtering. The Sheriff meets Tom and Harold at Bacon's to discover a display of pig-par art, rotten pigs. Lester greets them Tom Sanford, a former employee of Les' now successful on his own while Buddy makes pig sounds. The project will bring 100 jobs to the area and settle Les' debt. Lester refuses the offer of 55,000 and moralizes on the corrupt nature of modern butchery and mechanization and holds a Drayton Sawyer speech on the heroism of traditional butchery. He refuses to pay his taxes and the Sheriff informs him of his eviction in thirty days. Tom asks Harold what happened to Buddy's younger brother and is told that no one knows, but that Mrs. Bacon died giving birth to him. Officer Thomas pulls over Skip and lets him off with a lecture. Buzz, video girl, and the other two plan another horror video while Buddy kisses pigs and his father laments the loss of his business before finding the two teens on meat hooks in the house. Les curses him before praising him for the cleanness of the cuts, and adding that the cop lawyer and butcher deserve it more. After discussing a good locale, the kids decide to investigate the old slaughterhouse. Les calls Harold Murdock and apologizes while Buddy sharpens his pig-slasher. Les invites Harold for 1:30 to discuss the sale. Harold leaves a message that he'll be at Les'. Dave gets a call of a bad accident and that Eleanor Mitchell called to report Michelle and Kevin never came home last night. Ironically their horror movie feature a bearded redneck mask and knife wielding killer with a lizard man friend. It sucks as does the cheap Texas Chainsaw Massacre II rip off musuoic music. While Les invites Harold for five, Buddy enjoys a can of dog food. Officer Dave arrives at the slaughterhouse. The Sheriff returns sickened by the highway accident. Dave calls to the missing kids in the slaughterhouse, near to where they were last seen, finds a zombified cat, draws his gun and approaches the refrigerator. His arm becomes jammed in the door and Buddy chops it off, snorts and mocks him as he bleeds to death. Harold and Les reminisce as they enter the refrigerator where Les accuses him of conspiring to ruin him through taxation and deceiving people. He holds a trial and asks the dead to raise their hands if they find Harold innocent. From his perch above, Buddy lifts him by the head until blood squirts out his eyes and mouth. Skip and Liz make out in the woods while Buddy plays with a dead bird. The sheriff laments the missing and dead and the fact that the whole town will be out partying. The sheriff heads for the Lakeside hotel to see if Dave is there rendezvousing. Sally Jean Duncan admits she saw Deputy Thomas "early" this morning. Buddy dons Deputy Dave's gory uniform and drives off in the cruiser, snorting over the CB. Buddy pulls Sally Jean over and she soon is cornered and quartered. Liz is the Sheriff's daughter. Tom arrives at the slaughterhouse and Buddy seizes him while Les turns on the knife, which Les had just praised as effective, but Tom had dismissed as a museum piece. He is hacked up by the exhibit. At the pig out, the kids dance to techno-pop. The electricity is knocked out by lightning and the partiers are sent home with startling speed. The boys challenge Liz and Annie to spend an hour in the slaughterhouse for which they would receive 20. Should the girls get scared, they are to signal to the drinking boys (Skip and Bob) with a flashlight. The boys don masks and sneak up to scare the girls. As Liz shouts at Skip to stop trying to scare her, he is slaughtered by Buddy as she watches. Lizard-head Bob has his head smashed in horribly by Buddy's pick-axe. Liz searches for Annie and discovers her arranged in a refrigerator chambre des mort and set upon by Les who recites a special "This little pig" while
Mrs. Murdock has reported Murdock missing, and through the report that he was meeting Sanford, concludes they were headed for Bacon's. Les is pleased to find that his prisoner is the sheriff's daughter and ironically called Lizzie Borden. Les gives another speech on the virtues of butchering and the evils of modern society, then cuts open her finger while Buddy strokes her face. Les carves up Skip telling Liz to watch closely and see what he'll do to her. She kicks Les onto a hook and he removes himself ordering Buddy to catch her. Sheriff Borden arrives during the chase and Liz and he flee. Les stabs Sheriff as they leave and Sheriff shoots Les as he prepares to slaughter Liz. Liz loads sheriff into the car and locks the doors as wounded Les bangs on the windows. She does a circle and drives over his head which bursts. Buddy reaches from the back seat and twists and buries the knife already in her father then swings at her throat. -Fin.
