Plot Summary
Boston
The woman from the video, Melissa, is teaches ESL. Divorced, father in Italy. She gets a call from Diana and hears about her mother. The paperboy, Johnny McFarlane, who lives next door, introduces himself, bringing the luggage in. Johnny goes ovr and plays tea with the girls. Melissa seems a bit uneasy. The photos from last summer when she had visited are strangely missing. Johnny, still with key in hand, sneaks into the house while everyone is away. He steals a brush off the mantlepiece as a keepsake, and places a trnsmitter behind a vent--the better to eavesdrop. He listens in while brushing his hair. Johnny insinuates himself into their confidence and rides in their limosine to the funeral. When Johnny kisses the corpse, Melissa pulls him away. Johnny sneaks with Cammie downstairs in the morgue, and he tells her that when his mother had died, he had snuck down and fallen asleep in one of the empty caskets. He swears the spooked Candy to secrecy. When Johnny cleans up the kitchen, Melissa invites him to a barbecue. He reports that his father will not be interested in coming. Brian, an old flame who showed up at the funeral, calls, and Melissa goes for the date. The vamp, Brenda, shows up to babysit, and when Johnny finds out that it's not going to be the whole family at the cookout, he throws down the platter and runs off, and Melissa is tipped off that all may not be well in Johnnyland. Melissa, however, takes off with her old highschoolmate who admits to having had a crush on her (though she was just a little sophomore at the time). Johnny sneaks back to the house later and what does he see? Brenda grappling with her boyfriend. Melissa is dropped off by the schoolmate (no kiss). Brenda tells about the peeping Tom event, and Johnny ev esdrops. We worry about her. She hoses him the next dayas he drives by. Now we're really worried. When Melissa asks about his snooping, Melissa says Brenda was a liar, and Melissa is not impressed. She climbs te ladder toward her window, and Johnny has loosened the bolt. She falls from the ladder, and breaks her neck. Johnny reports it to Melissa as though it's a weather report that she's going to be a paraplegiac from now on. Johnny sneaks into the house again, and just then Melissa pulls up. Johnny just gets out in time, but Johnny senses that someone has just left. At six the next morning, Johnny is out mowing the lawn, and wakes up Melissa. She tells him to ask before he does things. She is becoming exasperated. Cammie sneaks into Johnny's house looking for Johnny, and Cammie sees her looking at photos of Melissa and Cammie. She accuses him of stealing them. He tells them she's his little sis and that he is making a present for her and her mom. He takes her with him on his root. He brings her to Mrs. Rosemont's house. They see Mrs. Rosemont, and she takes Cammie aside and tells her to stay away from him--that he's got the mark of Cain. Melissa comes home and finds Johnny playing with Cammie and shoos him off. She's getting a little tired of him. Johnny buys an orphan doll for Cammie (apparently he had stolen the previous one). Melissa notes that the orphan doll is expensive. Next he pulls out jewelry--he admits they're not real diamonds. Johnny sees Melissa's new beau and rushes off. They discuss Johnny when he leaves, and he eavesdrops, getting more and more furious. He tries to invite himself to the pizza party, and Brian nips that in the bud. Uh oh. As they dine at the pizza joint, Johnny watches through the window. Cammie tells Melissa about what Mrs. Rosemont said. Melissa passes it off as unimportant. Melissa runs into the inhaler using Mrs. Rosemont. She tells him the McFarley boy. She starts blithering about how he had tortured his mother even before she was born. When they arrive, there is Johnny in the house, pealing apples. He admits that her mother had given him the keys. He is sent out, and plunges the knife into the table before leaving. She confronts McFarley when he arrives. Johnny comes out trying to make ammends, and she tells him he can't come to the house anymore unless invited. Melissa and Cammie manage to get some time alone, but Johnny keeps an eye on them. At night, McFarley tries to talk with Johnny, who has locked himself in his room. McFarley gives him an early birthday present. McFarley himself is an avid golfer, and has given Johnny a set of clubs. He also announces that they'll be moving to California. When dad turns his back, Johnny uses the club on him. Johnny calls work and says his father is sick with pnemonia, that he won't be able to come to work for a few weeks, and that he is not interested in the California job. Johnny digs a hole in the basement, where he has dad on ice in the freezer. As Johnny watches, Brian shows up and witnesses a steamy scene. He is very disturbed. While she sleeps, Melissa dreams about the various events concerning Johnny--a nightmare. She realizes she needs to have a talk with Mrs. Rosemont. She asks her about the mark of Cain. Rosemont admits that his mother had beat him regularly. Rosemont says two weeks before she died, his mother had admitted to being afraid. Melissa sees only that he had been abused and has now been neglected. Johnny confronts her once more when she arrives about her meeting with Mrs. Rosemont. She calls Brian about her having contacted a social worker. Johnny, still digging in the basement, overhears on his receiver. Mrs. Rosemont is to be a witness. Johnny heads off to Rosemont's. He distracts the dog with a hotdog. He picks up the little scotty, and louisville slugger in his bag, arrives at Rosemont's place. He takes her inhaler away. The wheezing Mrs. Rosemont watches as he takes the bat to the dog, crushing it until it is covered with blood. This is sufficient to cause a corronary. Johnny didn't really have the dog in the bag, but Mrs. Rosemont will never know. Brian, that night, is at his autobody shop working late. Johnny shows up and manages to clock Brian a good one. He thinks of clubbing him to death, but sees gasoline and decides it will work better. He pulls out a flare, and it looks like Brian is torched. Johnny leaves thinking the deed is done. Brian wakes up and is buned a bit, but it appears he escapes before he is entirely burned. Melissa show3s up at night at Mrs. Rosemont's she finds the door unlocked, and she finds Mrs. Rosemont. Just then, Johnny calls, and Melissa answers, and Johnny asks how the meeting went. Melissa hears Cammie in the background. Melissa finds that Cammie isn't with Dianna where she is supposed to be. She rushes over to Hohnny's and looks frantically around the house. She hears Cammie, but it's just on video. Then she hears Cammie again, but this time it's the receiver. Johnny clubs her and starts to bury her alive, and Cammie comes over and sees the festivities. She manages to get away and Johnny is after her with a pickaxe. They struggle a moment, and Melissa gets the advantage. Just then the police arrive, and it looks like Melissa will be the one blamed for the murders, until Brian emerges from the car. Johnny is put away.
