Critique: These Zombies are slower than most, but then again they're on a boat and as any Darwinian could point out are perfectly adapted to their environment and needs. They look real scary, hunt in packs and sometimes use weapons, their victims are trapped on the boat, so they don't have to get around too well. But this is a fun Zombie movie that stumbles only at times due to the delightfully troubled translation and dubbing from Spanish (You'll surely enjoy the problems in the translation of the dubbing. The translator apparently had a fixation on the word "imbibe" among other problems) and the special effects are pretty cheap but the zombies are scary-looking and the scenery, lighting, colors and camera work, even the very cheap horror movie music create a very credible ghost ship atmosphere and make this film visually better than a lot of its ilk. We particularly enjoyed how uniformly ill-tempered the characters were in this film, particularly Noamie, who is constantly irate, and Sergio, the embittered crony of the cold capitalist Tucker. Their spat in the classless society of the doomed is one laughable highlight among many such as the professor's foolish rambling dissertation on fact and theory. The burning model ship at the end is priceless. How ironic that this greedy group would meet their makers at the hands of the greedy Knights of the Holy City who were excommunicated by a greedy king. Mmm greedy.
Plot Summary: Photo model Cathy has been missing for some days and her roommate Noamie knows that her boss the fashion agent Lillian talked to her just before her disappearance. Lillian explains she is on an out of town assignment being kept secret for business reasons. When pushed, Lillian tells her to meet her at 7:00 to learn the details. A publicity stunt by the sporting goods magnate Tucker goes awry when the two ad models he has set adrift in the ocean, Lorena & Cathy, are not discovered by the merchant ships he hopes will rescue them spectacularly and ensure publicity. Rather, a seemingly abandoned 16th century galleon pulls alongside the leaking vessel of the models. They radio for help "It's scary!" and their outraged roommate is bound by Tucker's henchman Sergio as a threat to their operation. She knows too much and they plan to keep her "until its safe." The desperate Larena climbs aboard the galleon, never to be seen again. Tucker consults the irascible professor Gruber and reports to him of the fog bank and the equatorial heat that the girls described. Talk of the galleon gets his attention. Gruber explains how many ships have reported seeing the Galleon on that meridian, but no one who has seen it up close has survived. All efforts to locate the galleon have failed and Gruber can't resist the temptation to go along on Tucker's search for the girls. On the next day Cathy boards the galleon to search for her friend. The crew of the sporting goods tycoon and modeling agency set off to save the young women, all the while scheming to get out of the scandal even if it means having Noamie and Tucker disappear. Meanwhile, Cathy waits on the Galleon as the Zombies slowly rise to Gregorian chants which make the Zombies seem even slower by comparison and throw her into the hold. Just then Sergio and the professor see the strange mist and feel the heat. The professor believes they are in another dimension due to the fact that neither fog nor heat appeared on his instruments in the lab. When they board the galleon, their skiff disappears leaving them trapped. Noamie is the first to go slowly. The Professor discovers the captains log which details the transportation of a group of Knights Templar excommunicated sectarians from the 13th century in their coffins from the Middle East to Europe.
They now drift in a fog bank preying on all who come near. Each night they are brought back to life to renew their satanic orgy. During the search for the girls, the team finds the coffins of the Templars, a room full of plunder from the Holy City, and YIKES! the Templars themselves! The Professor, who dabbles in the occult, performs an impromptu exorcism, but the results are only temporary and these zombies, although few in number and slow, are persistent. In a final desperate act, the crew attempts to throw the coffins overboard and swim for help.Torn between greed and fear each member of the party seeks her/his own way against the horror of the flesh eating zombies. Is there any hope of escape?
