Critique: Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings is a worthy successor to the excellent original Pumpkinhead, and a great job of special effects done by KNB EFX group on Pumpkinhead and basically the whole film. The plot of the story was rather good and MS. Osie played by Lilyan Chauvin really added to the story especially when she gave a thrilling performance when she warned the Sheriff Braddock that Pumpkinhead will not stop killing until he has his revenge, it really made me feel a sense of horror of the Pumpkinhead and the rage behind his tortured past. Grizzled horror movie veteran cast, yet, none of them has ever seen anything as scary as Pumpkinhead. I can understand the way how bad he feels from the torture he went through as a child and how he just spared his daughter's life. Have you ever wanted to see punky brewster swear, smoke pot, or just get killed by a monster? I felt that it took away from the horrifying presents of the Pumpkinhead and the whole basic plot of the film which is the a tortured soul back for revenge and to do so will kill any one which inflicted pain to him or his "family" in his human life. And the other part of the movie that I did not agree with is how every one seemed very out of it for a normal town. Noting that the Sheriff's defense of the murderous monster at the end, it having basically destroyed half the town, seems ill-motivated is nitpicking. Otherwise a film I enjoyed very much and a good job directing by Jeff Burr. Horror fans will enjoy the cameos by genre stalwarths Cane Hodder and Linnea Quigley. "Just Like You" (Theme from Pumpkinhead II) Performed by the first brother, Roger Clinton.
Plot Summary: Ferren Woods 1958. A mob of cruel teenagers chase a "freak" named Tommy, and beat him with a bat, hoist him on a pulley, cut him with a knife, and send him to his death into the ravine below. The present. Sean Braddock, a childhood resident of Ferren Woods, returns with his wife Beth and rebellious teenaged daughter Jenny. Dan Dixon, the very spoiled and rebellious son of Judge Dixon, and his clique of slacker teens skip school to go cruising. The mayor appears on the scene and warns the Sheriff to watch to make sure that his daughter does not fall in with a bad crowd. The Sheriff arrives at the hangout to find his daughter with the other teenagers at the spot where Tommy was killed, sends the others on their way and removes his daughter from the crowd. Later that night the Sheriff's daughter and Dan and the crowd are out playing chicken, and hit a old lady from the town, leaving her to die lying in the street. They proceed to break into the shack of the dying woman and investigate her stock of magical potions, spells, and relics, when, to their shock, the woman confronts them. She demands that Dan, who had stolen the "blood of the damned" and accompanying spell, return the dangerous items at once. The piece of paper tells of the local legend of the demon of vengeance Pumpkinhead, and indicates that the dead can be reanimated if the two elements, blood and incantation, are used properly. Ms. Osie struggles with Dan, who punches her in the head and leads the retreat, igniting the shack in the process. As they rush out the door, the ancient woman warns them that Pumpkinhead will have his revenge. They immediately proceed to the local graveyard, dig up a grave and discover a rotting pumpkin along with a decomposed body in the coffin. They recite the spell and pour the blood on the rotten pumpkin and corpse. Suddenly, they realize that Ms. Osie's shack is engulfed in flames and they rush from the graveyard to save the weak old woman, however, the blaze is too intense and they opt to flee. Meanwhile back at the graveyard, there is activity in the freshly opened grave. The next morning, Ms. Osie barely clings to life in the hospital in critical condition. Village idiot Ernst appears at the police station and tells Sheriff Braddock how he saw a red car strike an old woman last night and further, that "it's back" and will not be leaving until it gets what it wants. Braddock pays a visit to Judge Dixon's house and confronts Dan about the dent in his car, suspecting that Dan's hot rod is the vehicle that hit Ms. Osie. That night at the hospital, Ms. Osie begins convulsing while at the same time a local farmer is being hanged on a hook and slashed to death by a hideous monster, after which the convulsions stop. The next day, Braddock investigates the death of the farmer and Judge Dixon drops by to warn Braddock that he'll take matters into his own hands if can't handle the situation. Braddock found a link between the thing at Ms. Osie's place and the killing of Ernst and how the marks all over the place were the same. Nurse Delilah Pettihouse, along with Braddock and wife Beth discuss what could have done this and bring up the legend of Pumpkinhead. Braddock recalls and recites a local nursery rhyme: "Bolted doors and windows barred/guard dogs prowling in the yard/won't protect you in your bed/ nothing will from Pumpkinhead." Braddock's daughter Jenny has a nightmare about Pumpkinhead stalking her in the woods. Soon, the real Pumpkinhead marches to a nearby farmhouse where the fat retired postal worker, Red Byers, is enjoying the services of a local prostitute. Pumpkinhead breaks his back and proceeds to approach the prostitute, who escapes. The next morning, Braddock investigates Red's house where he discovers an incredible stockpile of goods that Red stole from the mail. He discovers the prostitute still alive, but catatonic after her confrontation with the monster. Meanwhile, Jenny and Dan talk about what they are going to do about the killing and to turn themselves in, then when Jenny leaves the scene, Dan meets his other trash friends, who are concerned that maybe the Pumpkinhead is going to kill them. Thus, Danny heads to the graveyard to show that Pumpkinhead is not real. On the other side of town, Braddock and Delilah search Red Byers' safety deposit box and discover a yellowed newspaper clipping about the deformed boy Thomas Parnell and the story goes that if he found you alone he'd rip your heart out and eat it and Braddock recalls how, at age seven, he encountered the unfortunate Tommy and saved his life when Tommy went to get his red fire truck that had fallen down a hole and then Tommy had moved away, and they puzzle over why Red kept a clipping on the deformed boy's murder. Mayor Bubba visits Braddock to encourage him to save the creature for publicity and to put the town on the map. Everyone regards him with disgust. At the graveyard, Dan and his friends discover to their dismay that the body on which they experimented is no longer there. The Pumpkinhead arrives at the local cock fights and rips the two organizers to pieces. At this point, Braddock deduces that all the men brutally killed are all in a way connected. Later on that night, Beth discovers that Jenny's sweater from last night smells of smoke, which she reports to Braddock. They conclude that she was at the fire a few nights ago. The next day, Osie dies, then briefly becomes possessed by some sort of spirit and tells Braddock that she was Tommy's guardian and that he had pulled her from the fire and she also tells that after the Pumpkinhead kills the last of six men that killed Thomas, he will go after the children that burned her to get it's revenge and that Pumpkinhead is Tommy's father, she also mentions the Redwings, a local gang in 1958. Braddock ascertains that the last of the six redwings is Judge Dixon. Meanwhile, Pumpkinhead is already marching toward Judge Dixon's house. Danny, Jenny, and the arrive at Dixon's recreational cabin to drink, but decide instead to turn themselves in. Danny produces a gun and orders them to stay. Meanwhile, Pumpkinhead enters the Judge's house and after a desperate attempt by the Judge, Pumpkinhead smashes in the Judge's head. Next on Pumpkinhead's list are the teens who killed Osie, still held at gun point. For fear of the monster, Danny orders Paul to bring the car around for a getaway, however, Pumpkinhead removes him from the car and throws him through the cabin window, causing the rest to flee. Pumpkinhead runs Marcie through the heart with a pole and turns to run the same pole-with her on it-through her boyfriend Peter, reuniting them. Pumpkinhead rips off Danny's head, tosses it aside, and quickly closes on Jenny. Before he can finish Jenny, Braddock steps in the way and pleas for mercy, reminding the monster that he had saved Tommy's life. Despite Braddock's attempt to stop them, as the monster is about to leave, an angry mob fires hundreds of rounds sending it stumbling onto the hook over the bridge, then into the valley below, just as had Tommy in 1958. As Braddock sadly searches the rubble beneath the bridge, he finds a symbol of Thomas's innocence, his own red fire truck.
