Critique: The arrival of a confused young woman in Cairo coincides with the opening of an ancient Egyptian tomb by corrupt millionaire artifacts-smuggler. The mummy is thus busy on two fronts as an astrological anomaly provides him the opportunity to reincarnate his concubine-lover while he punishes the grave-robbers. Decent modern mummy story despite itself. The astrological babble and the long-winded mummy speeches become trying at times, but director Gerry O'Hara shows a knack for getting out of them and into the story again cleanly. Tony Curtis is surprisingly good as a mummy who is both scary and weird without any traditional make-up, indeed a novel approach. His modern day American princess, the soul-searching Sandra (Leslie Hardy) is likewise effective as the world traveler come somewhat unraveled by her involvement with the mummy. The location shots of Cairo, and the traditional mummy chamber set provide a nice backdrop for this very moody journey. The few scenes in which the mummy does his dirty work are scary, if they are counterbalanced by some real tv-movieesque and hammy entrances by Curtis. As in most horror movies that use snakes, this one uses the wrong kind. The endless voice-overs of an ancient voice praying to Toth are a snore. You can't scare people with a chicken snake and the only rattle snake in Egypt is at the Cairo Zoo. Some odd inconsistencies spring up halfway through: Williams begins to narrate the film, and Azira playfully tortures Dr. Kroll. Azira wears gloves to hide his mummy hands, but the rest of him looks normal.
Plot Summary: When the stars are again properly aligned he will seek his beloved in the hope that his beloved will join him in immortality.
After a brief review of zodiacal lore, Sandra Barnes arrives at Cairo airport, depressed over the death of her father and not ready to marry Jean, they parted. With her inheritance she travels the world (London, Amsterdam, Paris) in search of inner peace, until she realizes that Egypt is the place she wanted to be. "Media Millionaire Leads Luxor Dig" reads the headline in Cairo as the millionaire is on the car phone firing the Queen's cousin as editor of one of his papers. Lord Maxton wants headlines from this "circus" and blasts his excavation Chief Mr Kroll for the team's lack of progress. Suddenly, Kroll's diggers find the gate to a tomb. Sara theorizes about the design of the pyramids and its relationship to the constellations, before puzzling over how strangely familiar Egypt is to her. As Maxton pressures his men, the Egyptian police arrive just as the gate is chipped open. The police bar and lock the dig and take the key. As Sandra dreams, she sees an army of ancient Egyptian concubines leading a ritual procession for the god Toth. Azira sits before the image of Toth, taps his staff three times, and a dance begins featuring the most beautiful of the concubines. Maxton, Kroll and three friends return to the dig in the middle of the night with another key and encounter a cobra and the symbol of Toth, the god of revenge. The hieroglyphics read that the high priest Azira is buried here with a thousand curses to protect the treasures of Toth. All the same, Maxton busts in a door and calls for the lumpers. As the team reads of Azira's curse on his sarcophagus, Sandra dreams of the high priest Azira trysting with the high priestess as jackal headed spies lurk nearby. Sandra dreams and cries out "They're coming!" as the concubine pours her lover wine. The priest sketches his lover and they begin having sex as the jackal-heads signal a small army which binds them and carries them off after which Azira is damned to death without afterlife to guard the treasures for despoiling a virgin priestess of Toth. Priests wrap and lacquer him alive. In the present, the nonbelievers open the tomb of the mummy. Despite the warnings of the Egyptian guide, Kroll cuts the mummy's wrappings to discover a remarkably preserved body. The scientists agree that the mummy was wrapped so tightly while still alive that he constricted himself to death. After inspecting the decomposed head, Ali, who was so afraid of the curse, is left to close the sarcophagus, which he dutifully performs, once having stolen golden neck and headdress of the priest and exits. As a policeman steals more gold jewelry from the mummy, it grabs him by the throat and strangles him before settling back in the sarcophagus. Leaving the Sheraton to visit the Museum of Archaeology, Sandra waxes on the metaphysical, bemoaning the lack of totality in post-modern civilization. On observing ancient Egyptian art, she feels that part of her knows this all and sees the eyes of an ancient lover. The mummy goes for a walk which sets off a thunder storm that disrupts the electricity at the museum. Sandra has a flashback to the lovers taking leave, and smashes a glass case to steal the ring that the Azira gave his lover by snapping off her dried out hand snapped off hand and all, before feinting in the arms of the museum director. Toth restores the mummified Azira to his former non-mummified Tony Curtis state, who in turn asks the jackal statue Toth for his orders. Sandra is brought to handsome psychologist Carey Williams of Doctors for the Third World for psychological evaluation. The museum director Professor Hashem does not press charges, despite the damage to the mummy and attempted theft. Maxton leads an Egyptian cultural ministry tour of the find when a statue of a goddess suddenly glides forward opening a gate from which the high priest Azira emerges in a flood of light and introduces himself as Dr. Riyahd, Abdul Mohassed. "He who enters will die" warnings aside, the party enters and is greeted by a falling sarcophagus cover which shatters at their feet followed by the mummified body of the grave robber/security guard. Azira repeats I am the guard and protector of the dead, noting that the guard was the first to enter, thus the first to die. In a dream, a mummy tries to wrap Sandra but she awakens in time. Sandra and Dr. Williams ride horses to the excavation site. Shockingly, they are attacked by Egypt's only rattle snake. Willams wants to interpret Sandra's dreams. As Mohassed visits Dr. x from the team, a snake eats his parakeet. When he gets his gun, mummy and snake disappear. After an encounter with (what else?) a snake handler, Sandra runs through the city which has evolved into a nightmarish vision where she is robbed by mangled beggar in a rat-filled tunnel. Jupiter and Mars are now aligned and as she breaks free of the beggars, she runs into the open arms and cloak of Azira. Azira delivers Sandra to a panicking Dr. Williams at the hotel. Azira leaves with the assurance that they'll meet again in Luxor. Williams doesn't like Azira, but Sandra does. In the museum again, she has visions of the priestess and Azira, breaks some more things and is met at the door by Azira and Carey. As they see that nothing is broken, Sandra buzzes and thinks two Jackal men put her in a sarcophagus. Williams Freuds up her dreams, but she is skeptical. Azira dazzles the Egyptologists with his knowledge of ancient Egypt, which earns him an invitation to Maxton's cocktail party. As an Egyptian archaeologist, Dr. Hammadi, prepares a sarcophagus for removal, Azira mumbles "Graverobber" and lets a lid crush him - graverobber! At a reception, Maxton laughs at the "curse" and Azira calls him a criminal, a graverobber. Azira tells Maxton to leave his grave and Egypt and promises to show Sandra the dig. That evening, Sandra again is overcome by feelings that she has been to Luxor before. Williams wants to leave for Greece or any other place, but Sandra wants to stay and placates him with a kiss. That night, Sandra is chased from her room by a real cobra and only Azira is there to help her. He wants her to sleep in his bed and she complies, while he takes off. She awakes in her own room screaming beside a mummy which disappears when Williams rushes in. Maxton and Kroll agree to send off some choice pieces before the culture ministry gets them. Azira promises Toth he'll punish the graverobbers and Toth orders him bring back the girl Sandra. Williams urges Sandra to return to Cairo but she listens to Azira read ancient stories. Azira shows Sandra the observatory. Azira tries to give Sandra his ring, but she doesn't take it. Tomorrow the planets align. Williams researches Mars and Jupiter embrace, and reads about the reconstitution of mummies and the museum guy tells Williams the tragic love story of Azira and Kia. Williams realizes that Azira considers Sandra Kia's reincarnation.. Azira goes on endlessly about his plan to reunite Kia and Toth. Azira presents Maxton a cat as a peace offering and it scratches his face off.Azira visits the mangled Maxton in the hospital, he dies. Azira tells the associates to leave Egypt. Azira wants to deliver the goddess to Toth and free himself from his eternal slavery. The ring was given to Toth's concubines as guarantee of their afterlife. Every 3000 years comes the embrace, Dr museum tells Williams of the tragic love story of Kia and Azira and he rushes to Luxor for he is now convinced the Azira holds her for the reincarnation of Kia. After a rattle snake gets his associate, Kroll is wrapped by Azira, who explains how he will remove his brains with an hook and other uncomfortable details. Sandra rushes to see Azira, who wrote her of an emergency. Actually, he only wants to view the embrace with her. He gives her a wine, which he says she has had before. A storm hinders Williams' trip to Luxor a s fallen palms block the road. Azira dresses the drugged Sandra as Kia. The windows swing open and Azira begins to decompose (all but his face) promising Toth he has everything ready. He carries Sandra to the tomb. Williams is told that Sandra left in a black limo, and decides to call the police. Azira presents Toth his favorite concubine. Williams and a policeman arrive at the site to find the entrance buried by rubble, which they feverishly move until they are interrupted by Ali, whom they accuse of killing the cop/grave robber and force to accompany them. Ali falls through a whole which leads them to an alternate entrance. Azira prepares to mummify Kia, but she throws boiling balsam in his face and lights the place on fire. Azira burns and the cop shoots him nine times. As the group flees, Ali is attacked by a snake and buried in rubble. The cop is crushed as the Americans escape. The planets embrace, but Azira is left hanging as a constellation.
