Critique: Al's ploy with the girls is amusing and Crenshaw and the reverend's mild responses to Evelyn's attempts to horrify them get a few laughs. The beginnning of the movie seems to indicate that something will be done with the shrines and the invoking of the dead father. Nope. This movie grinds along after the midpoint, but the first half is not bad. If you like sickles.. What kind of accomodations do you want for seven bucks anyway?
Plot Summary: Arkansas State Mental Hospital Chambers, Evelyn Admitted: July 13, 1978 along with a photo of a tortured looking woman in a straight jacket. Released: January 24, 1981. While working in her garden, Evylyn is put off by her daughter Lori's guinea pig munching at her lettuce and soon she puts its head off with the sickle. It seems momma's gittin sick agin. Lori's talking to her dead father for guidance--Lori summoning him at ritual with candles and drawings of sacrificial beasts. Evelyn is not pleased. In her frenzied destruction of the shrine, Lori's sythed as well. The paramedics are called in, CPR applied, but it's no good. Tough the sheriff's intrigued by the shrine set up, and not happy about the death being a gardening accident, that's the way it stands. Evelyn imagines the thoughts around her at the funeral and they're not flattering. Evelyn's back running the motel. Reverend Bill, the only customer for a while, is glad to see Crenshaw move into the the motel--not too many people doing that these days after the "accident". A newlywed hick couple arrives. Evelyn says she has a surprise for his little wife. Evelyn's little present is a rattlesnake. After the codgers finish their sloppy drunken dispute about where the kingdom of heaven is, Crenshaw departs for his cabin, unaware that he has a little present in store for him as well. Two debutants Tanya and Prissy spin off the road and get picked up by salesman, Al. He takes one look at the wet t-shirted young women and "explains" that he owns columbia records, prompting the inevitable offer that they sing for him. A tree falls in the storm, blocking the only road down the mountain, setting the stage for Evelyn's trap door tricks. When the girls admit they left their money in the car, the record magnate explains to the girls that they can stay with him. The old codger awakens to find his room crawling with rats which he shoos away. Evelyn, skulking in the shadows, seems pleased with the result. There are pictures of Lori on the walls and Evelyn is reading about angels from hell with sharp sickles. Crenshaw doesn't seem overly put off by his present--his response: 'damn roaches--they ought to call this a roach motel'. Back in Al's room, the audition is proceeding. One of Prissy is skeptical of Al's credentials but the otherone feels the chance is worth taking. It appears Prissy should have taken the chance because there's a trap door in the bathroom where she sulks. Al and Tanya find only a smear of blood. The reverend receives an unwanted blessing from Evelyn. Crenshaw sees Evelyn coming up through the trap door, and quick as a flash pulls out a hammer and nails, securing his cabin. Soon the cops show up and things are looking under control. But the fun's not over as Evelyn shows up with more presents for the newlyweds. Crenshw and Al finally descend to the underground tunnels to try to flush out Evelyn, but she gets a hand up on Crenshaw. Down there Evelyn's got a nice shrine set up with boasting the reverand's corpse as a center piece. The sheriff descends into the warren to join the fray.
