Critique: Rob Reiner's direction shows the deftest touch, at times light, and consistently terrifying. James Caan is perfect and Cathy Bates gives a terrifyingly bipolar performance for which she won an Oscar. The suspense is excruciating when Paul explores the house as Annie heads home. The same when the Sheriff explores the house. Is the Colorado police officer named after NBA and former Syracuse star Sherman Douglas? The showdown elicited real gasps from the reviewers a photo of Liberace.
Line: Oogie, dirty bird, cockadoodie, poop! Give her a YIKES! Award!
Plot Summary: Author Paul Sheldon of Worcester MA, has just finished his latest and hopefully last "Misery" novel: he's had it with the "Misery" business. Misery is to die. about an eighteenth century woman, He hops in his in Colorado 65 Mustang and driving to deliver the manuscript he drives off a cliff in a snowstorm. Paul is rescued from his overturned car and applied C.P.R. and carried to safety with manuscript. "I'm your number one fan. I'll take good care of you." After two day at Annie Wilkes' who has a live-in sow named Misery, he regains consciousness just outside Silver creek, Colorado. Annie tried to get him to the hospital but due to the intensity of the storm and the downed phone lines, she could not get him there. As soon as the road is open she promises to bring him back. Marcia Sindell calls the Sheriff Buster in Silver Creek looking for Paul Sheldon. Its a tradition for Paul to finish his novels at the Silver Creek Lodge. Annie has read all eight misery novels. She keeps him on Narvol to fight the pain. After 40 pages Annie has her first criticism, the strong language and she shows an uncontrollable temper. People really don't talk that way. The Sheriff finds Sheldon's wrecked car. Annie has just picked up a copy of the latest "Misery's Child". Annie explains of how her husband left her and she nearly went insane. She dove into the work at the hospital. In the middle of the night she busts into the room, "You dirty bird!" She has just read that misery died in childbirth. After nearly assaulting him she decides she'd better not be around him for a while. She also informed him that she lied about contacting his agent, his daughter and the hospital, no one knows he's there and she warns, "If I die, you die." an allusion to her depression and suicidal tendencies. Annie proposes a deal The witness stand in Denver, after consulting with god. If he burns his new manuscript, he can have food. When he refuses she wets him down with lighter fluid. Paul complies. The work on "Misery's Return" can begin. Annie buys a typewriter and some wrong paper. When she leaves to get the right paper, Paul gets a hairpin off the floor to add to his arsenal of drugs he's been saving. He is able to pick the lock with the hairpin, and ventures into the house only to find the phone disconnected, he does find some more drugs When Annie starts to throw him kisses and call him darling the heat is really on. The rain gives Annie the blues in her depression she declares her love for him. She expresses her fear of losing him. The book is getting finished and his legs are getting better, she has a gun and sometimes she thinks about using it. The sheriff discovers a line in one of Paul's novels that leads to a hunch "There is a justice higher than that of man. I will be judged by Him." and a book of clippings on the "Angel of death" Annie Wilkes, convicted of several killings of newborns along with clippings of the deaths of her husband and a fellow nursing student.
Paul procures a carving knife but is drugged before he can use it. Annie noticed her ceramic penguin was no longer facing due south. She knows he saw the scrapbook. He has to stay and after explaining the operation of hobbling used to keep diamond mine thieves from escaping, she performs the hideous operation, crippling him via "hobbling". The Sheriff remembers where he heard the judgment line and after some research, finds the articles on the killings. Annie Wilkes quoted the lines at her sentencing. The sheriff heads to the general store where he finds out about her obsession with Paul and the recent purchase of typing paper whereupon he immediately heads for the Wilkes place. Annie explains that god told her to prepare to replace Paul Sheldon. Annie decides its time She and Paul left the world together. Paul explains that they have first to finish the book and the terrifying showdown is on.
