Critique: As so often happens with these Poe adaptations, something has been lost in the translation. Watching Prospero's slide ainto macheivelian practices is compelling. The fear of plague is well place: didn't he have to drive the peasants from the walls? Wasn't he forced to keep the nobles happy, and waht's the harm in a little dance? And after all, he gave Juliette every chance to cxome to him on her own. Propero will gain some good will from Highlander fans, and in the beginning he is surely a positive character. The fact that we know the story..Not an expensive film. The general quality is on the dark side, which might be an attempt at atmosphere, but simply adds to the viewer's impatience. Avengers fance will get about what they expect: a stolid Machievel, sedately dispensing death. It does seem that more could have been done with the visual signs of plague, but it's hard to keep up with Poe's description here. Note that this is producer Roger Corman's second stab at Poe's tale (and thousandth horror movie)and the first one (1964) with Vincent Price was just as good, if predictably for Corman in the early sixties, very cheap.
Plot Summary: The child Prospero (whose father is evil) is returned by Machievel, his tutor, to his father's castle. The now grown prince is haunted by dreams of something penetrating the walls. There are rumors of plague outside the walls. Prospero orders all red removed from the castle for the coming party. Paolo is confronted by a cowled horrseman, and a touch of the hand seals his fate. Prospero's messengers come upon the corpse of Paolo. A soldier is slain for touching it. Prospero and his sister have sex in a dungeon in front of a tortured corpse. The maidens of the villages and his nobles are brought to the castle. Meanwhile Death has come to the village and good Benito comes to the cowled stranger to give him food. The stranger warns Benito to take food and to bolt his doors. Back at the masque, the maidens are made to strip for the amusement of the nobles. After some hooting, there is a moment of silence and then guilt. Lucretia tries to free Juliette from the walls, but is caused and branded. She is made to serve the nobles herself--having lost her brother's favor. Lucretia comes to Juliette with a key and bids her use it only when she's acted. The red-cowled stranger comes to the walls with his invitation to the masque. Soon the soldiers lie dead in the courtyard beyond the party. As the masque begins, the red cowled stranger enters. Machievel is the cowled stranger and he seems not to be pleased with Prospero's rule--deciding who lives and who dies.
