Critique: Less a horror movie than a psycho-thriller with woods and college crossover elements, and an intriguing one at that. Horror films supply retribution for transgressions such as the prank at the outset, but this may be one of the most extreme cases as the killer has only one motive, eliminating witnesses to an unrelated murder. The acting in this inexpensive film deserves special recognition. The four girls, for all their empty-headedness, are compelling characters. Tension is built in a number of subtle ways: the identity of the owner of the wallet in the mass grave being a particularly brilliant one. We get very little hint about the character of the handsome murderer--appropriately other than when he catches sight of himself in a mirror and pauses for a moment. At this point the murders have built up a bit, and he looks upon his image with some surprise, noticing what he had become. It is interesting too that he is not quick to judge himself too harshly. The subtleness of the film comes also in the radio activity we hear intermediately, full of protestant fundamentalism and self congratulations for the community. Not good signs in a horror film. Indeed, the setup of the town's selfcomplacent hipocracy and the introduction of the boys as potential saviours, as well as the characterization of the coeds as boss, brain, and sluts along with some intentional and effective straying from formula (who will survive til showdown?) provide for a very unpredictable tale with some scary images (the grave and the hanging) and scary surprises. Some pleasant background pop-country music written and mostly sung by Mason Daring, in particular "Waitress". Filmed in Dade County Florida.
