Critique: In spite of its complication, this film is masterfully worked. This film actually draws us in to the story of the apocalypse without being trite or overblown. Wait till Jimmy turns all of Russell's arguments for his pleading incompetence with the simple retort: it matters to God. Around the kitchen table, when both Russell and Abby decide that there's nothing they can do to right the injustice, David sadly agrees that there is nothing that can be done. This simple statement is guaranteed to send a chill down your spine. He too is resigned about and disappointed with the human race. Nice interplay when Abby and Avi are trying to decide what the fifth seal hides. When she can't think of what it is and he doesn't either she complains that he should know that. His retort is that that's not his book. Has their ever been a movie where the portrayal of Christ has added (immensely to a film rather than doomed it to silliness.)
If you don't respect Demi Moore's work after seeing this film, it may just be that you're stupid. Seen enough religious horror? Idiot.
Plot Summary: December 25, in Haiti a man walks along the beach, breaks a wax seal and the fish die and wash up on the shore. December 28, Negev Desetrt Israel where anancient desert city is frozen solid. Father Lucci arrives and says this happened here before Baldahar was Sodom before it was destroyed by the wrath of God. January 6, Venice California, Abby Quinn is seven months pregnant after having lost one baby late in her pregnancy. She had tried to commit suicide. As she sleeps Abby has a dream of a Roman Centurian beating Christ demanding, "Will you die for him?" She answers "No!" and awakes. Her lawyer husband, Russell is defending the killer, a retarded boy who killed his parents after God told him to. Executed for the word of God. The client Jimmy, son of a brother and sister pair who poured gasoline on him. Jimmy knows what is right and wrong and he did nothing wrong. The lwayers say dio anything to save your life, "It matters to god!" David Banner from all over and the teacher of ancient languages who has "really just come back to town" is looking for humble accommadations. He has only a short wave radio. When Abby visits to invite him to dinner she finds an ancient document sealed with the symboy odf abn apocalyptic horseman. At Dinner, David tells an ancient Hebrew tale of the newborn child and the sparrow. Gods hall the guf, whenebaby gets its soul from the guf, only the sparrow can see the soul descend and they sing. Abby nearly miscarriseies in a church where David has just broken the fourth seal. Father Lucci finds the water turned to blood. Abby watches the news which lists only death and disaster. David tells Abby he used to think the world had changed but it hasn't. "The course is chosen." Abby, I'm sorry about the baby." Father Lucci is closely monitoring world events, seas dying, catastrophic weather, war, and announces, "The prohecies, they have begun." Fatherv Lucci reports to the church elders that he has investigated the "signs" and found them all to be scientifically explainable phenomena or a hoax, not signs of the apocalypse. Abbie searches David's room and finds scrolls with 2-29 written on them among newspaper articles documenting the depravity od humankind. In the process she knocks a sealed scroll off the desk and steps on it which instantly brings an earthquake. Outside trhe house lies a dead sparrow. Last time it was placental insufficiency, this time she thinks its David. She goes to Doctor Ornstein hacidic Rabbi for a translation. Malihim code hebrew used in the Middle Ages the neighbor boy Avi, tells her. Judgement day. Signs that foretell the coming of the end God's wrath is about to destroy the world. There are only a finite number of souls in the Guf and when it is empty the world will end. The death of the world is heralded by the first child born without a soul. With this information, Abby surmises that David is a religious fanatic who believes he can save the world by killing her baby. As Avi translates the pages, the moon turns blood red. Abby confronts David who says it's all over. When she tries to protect herself with a knife she sees that he is not just a maniac but is indeed the wrath of God. She is hospitalized for delusional thinking. Avi goes to a catholic priest with evidence from his page and notes that the signs appear to be coming. The priest takes his apocalyptic fears very lightly. It looks as though Abby has gien up. hen she gets home, she sits in the tub and poises the razor over her old scar. An old priest sees father Lucci and calls out to "father Morell". He realizes it couldn't be father Morell because he had known Morell so long ago but the resemblance is remarkable. David tells Abby that there's nothing that can he done. If the sign is stopped, then the chain would be broken but he says that she has no hope her flirting with suicide shows that only too well. . The next day hail showers strike people down in the streets. Father Lucci pulls Abby out of the hail. Lucci says he has come to help her and her baby. They try to decide which sign they can stop. The sun turns to darkness with the sixth seal. Abby herself is the seventh seal. When she sees the ring on Lucci's finger, she realizes Lucci was the man in the dream who struck christ as the wind rages. She realizes too that she had been there too but was unwilling to die for him. Lucci admits to father Harold that that he is Cardifilus, pilate's gatekeeper, cursed to walk the Earth until the end of time. He can't have father Harold interfering. Jimmy's last appeal has failed. They decide the missing seal hides the death of a martyr. They decide he will die by execution: the word of God killer. As Lucci enters a taxi, apparently to make sure nothing goes awry with the execution, David looks on. Abby races to try to do something about the execution as the eclipse nears.
