Critique: This movie blends astute political commentary with a very believable depiction of zombies. There are a number of points at which you will be terrified: that is rare indeed for a horror movie.
Plot Summary: Haiti 1978. We witness a Haitian burial. The corpse sheds a tear for his wailing bride as the sod is thrown. Amazon basin 1985. A Harvard researcher takes a shaman's elixir and is thrown into a dream of clutching hands drawing him into the Earth. The helicopter pilot is found dead. He makes it back to Boston. Biocorps. He is asked what he knows about zombification. It appears Christophe Duran, buried seven years earlier. He's still very much alive. It could be a new anesthetic. Soon we are in a world of possessed dancers and voodoo magicians. They track down Christophe in a cemetery. he resides only in cemeteries now. Unlike other zombies, he can talk. He believes he is dead. They go to a local magician for the powder who zombifies a goat. The goat was just a trick, but Mozart really does know how to produce the powder. The Duvalier regime is fast disintegrating. In that ruthless atmosphere, Dr. Allen is caught up in the political struggle. Voodoo is a source of the regime's power, and Dr. Allen is threatening that power. Soon Dr. Allen falls into the clutches of Petraal. What ensues is one of the most horrifying torture scenes in film history. Dr. Allen is placed under Petraal's power. He returns to the states and the drug is analyzed. However, Petraal can get to Dr. Allen even there. His dreams and even the people who he comes into contact with are under Petraal's power. He must return to Haiti where Petraal's grasp on Dr. Allen further intensifies.
