Critique: The horror movie mood is steady and engaging, due in no small part to a very experienced cast as evidenced by the credits above. Particular mention go to Lori Laughlin as Susan, John Harkins as Sanders, and a very young Meg Ryan. Even without the 3-D effects, there are some scary come at the viewer effects. Dead Susan is real old-fashioned scary and corroded Sanders in the photos is also good for a chill. The reality and gravity of a life cut short by drowning is played wonderfully here and the scene is run masterfully by director Stern who is a favorite for his chillingly subtle "Pin". The drowning in this film, which isn't even shown, is more effective than a million rubber demons. This might give some producers cause to think and is a must for film students. The showdown in the well to hell is also inexplicably scary and suspenseful, even with Tony Roberts down there.
Plot Summary: Amityville real Estate is getting business once again. A seance is held in the house in Amityville. A young woman calls to her son. Then the somnambulant, Mrs. Caswell, begins to moan. Then a young boy's voice does seems to be calling from somewhere. And then there's a green glow moving toward them. But Elliot West and Reveal Magazine is debunking their activities. They finish finding the fakery in the room itself and head down to the basement, but the power goes out and they leave. The owner, Sanders, arrives telling them that he knew nothing about the scam. He then almost falls through the floor into an old well. The con man claimed that the owner was involved. The owner can't unload the house, but then the unsuperstitious debunking reporter, Baxter, gets the house for a song. Melanie is surprised to find that Sanders is corroded in the photographs. Sanders comes to see them while no one is home, giving the flies an opportunity to express their opinion of him. Baxter arrives to find him gurgling out his last breath. Ninety seven percent of the cases of occult claims turn out to be explainable. Baxter and his daughter move into the property at Ammityville. Melanie, Baxter's co-worker, doesn't like the place. She arrives while no one is home. This house is particularly hard on lone visitors. Gags such as doorknobs coming off in her hand keep her bottled in. Baxter is in an elevator that is suddenly out of control. It goes into freefall. He survives it. It's getting cold at Ammityville. Melanie goes down to the basement and thinks things are not right in the basement. She runs up when suddenly a fell wind blows out from the cellar, sending her against the wall. Baxter arrives to find a whimpering Melanie. She runs out of the house raving for him to get away. Melanie is a bit miffed at John when he intimates that she imagined it. West is giving sensory deprivation to subjects and finds that their sense of reality drops away. Mrs. Baxter is worried about her daughter moving into that house. Lisa tells Susan that one can have sex with ghosts. They poke around looking for the places where the murders took place. Lisa uncovers the well. The tortured spirits are supposed to still be there. Then someone walks slowly down the stairs. It's father. Mother is still concerned about Susan's going there. Melanie is still analyzing the photographs. In a magnifying glass, she sees the tiny face of a demon in one of them. Driving back Melanie is in an accident that is tinged by the supernatural, and she is horribly burned to death. The teens get together for a seance in the house in which it is indicated that one of them is in danger. Nancy, the Mother, comes to the house and finds Susan inside alone but she won't answer. Simultaneously, the kids bring Susan out of the water with Susan drowned. West is convinced that there might be something to Nancy's story, and indeed, there is something going on. West's boys set up some elaborate ghost buster style detection equipment. A spectral image appears, and somehow Nancy knows it's Susan. She is drawn to the well down below. West is then consumed by a demon that leaps out of the well. Everything just blows up.
