Critique: 1427 Elm Street. The first half of this movie builds up tension in a way that only Nightmmares I and II achieve. It is also a lot of fun to see scenes of Freddy as a human being. The dream beings provide a rationale for this whole mess. Unfortunately, after they get to Springwood, the dream wars start, and they just are not all that interesting. Let's face it, it would take some real ingenuity to frighten us at this point with one of these dream battles. Much more chilling is the uncertainty and anticipation that marks the first part of the film. Driving into a desolated Springwood is an eerie thing. There is, unfortunately, some looseness to this film. People seem to be able to jump into one another's dreams without much in the way of explanation. Tracy's explanation of "mediation" doesn't cut it.
Roseanne and Tom Arnold are psychotics. In the town, that is.
