Critique: This fifth installment marks a return to the scary mood of the first two and with that a departure from the silliness of 3 and 4. The moment when Ammanda is accidentally locked in with a room full of violently insane men is horrifying enough for anyone. In general the asylum scenes work well, and the quest to locate Ammanda's bones to lay her and Freddie to rest is a sound device. The dreaming fetus was not a bad idea, but in the end it is nothing more than a mechanism to keep this now thoroughly used up idea in motion. One problem, again, is trying to work up any interest in the victims. This one does work better than Cyber-generation romps 3 and 4, not as well as 1 & 2. The primary problem is the formula. Here, a potentially, and indeed at times scary ghost story, becomes a vehicle for rubber heads and appendages. However, the raison d'etre for rubber heads and appendages was to make horror movies scare more effectively by increasing their arsenal. That was in the days of the sneak attack. Here, as so often, the exact opposite has been achieved. The straight scenes frighten, the predictable rubbery ones are silly.

Plot Summary: Springwood, Ohio. After sex, a woman's shower turns into a nightmare as she is nearly drowned before breaking out, landing nude in a dark mental assylum. A nun, Ammanda Kreuger, is accidentally locked in with the hideous inmates. They close in on her. Alice awakens and for a brief moment is taunted by one of the asylum rapists, looking very much the father of Freddy Krueger. It's graduation day at Springwood High School. Alice tells her big - bound for college football - boyfriend, Dan, that she had one of those dreams last night. Alice, apparently still suffering from narcolepsy and in a dream-state, follows little girls in party-dresses singing the Freddie nursery rhyme; she sees the nun again, and follows her into the dark corridors of the asylum. There she witnesses Ammanda Krueger giving birth. There's something wrong. Ammanda says it's no creature of God. It escapes from a nurse's grasp and scuttles away. Alice is in a church with the child Freddie and its screaming brings the church apart at its seams. Freddy pulls on his razor-glove, dons his hat, and then rising from the rubble, Freddie quips "it's a boy". Ghostly Ammanda urges that she must be released from her earthly prison. Freddy tells Alice she will never find Amanda. Alice wakes and calls Dan at the graduation party at the school pool. On the way there, Freddy appears in the truck, pours champagne on Dan and causes an accident. Dan arises, steals a motorcycle which Freddy possesses and crashes right in front of the restaurant where Ellen works. Accident victim. To make matters perfect, a doctor's examination upon her subsequent break-down finds Alice pregnant. At the hospital, Alice meets a little boy named Jacob who inexplicably knows her boyfriend was killed. Strangely, she finds later that there are no children in the hospital. Alice learns later that Ammanda Kreuger was part of the order that ran the hospital, and that Kreuger keeps on killing. At a party given by Greta's mother, Greta, the anorexic would-be model gets her mouth stuffed with food by Freddie in a chef's outfit, which evokes a laugh at first, panik when she subsequently suffocates. In a vision, the choking Greta cries for help from Alice's refrigerator, which has taken on a Pee-Wee-esque life of it's own. A not on the fridge reads "Die Bitch!" It is perplexing to Alice that her friends died while she was awake. Alice sees cartoonist friend Mark in one of his cartoons and quickly sketchs herself into it. She locates him atop a windtunnel to hell and manages to pull him out. Mark then feints and disappears through the floor in another spot. Surprisingly Jacob appears, talks about his friend with the funny hand, and disappears when his friend calls him. When Alice is back in the world, Mark's still alive but bleeding like in her vision. 2Her friend Yvonne informs her that babies dream. It looks like they've got an answer to how the others are dying while she's been awake. While she observes via amniosentisis, Freddy feeds the souls of her dead friends to her fetus. Alice's doctor spoke to Dan's parents about her paranoid delusions regarding what Freddie was trying to do to her baby. The parents want to adopt "Dan's" babyThe story was that Ammanda killed herself and that the body was never found. She is trapped in her Earthly resting place. Atop the high dive things get all Freddied for Ivanne. Meanwhile, Mark finds a copy of "nighmares from hell". It seems to feature Freddie Kreuger. Freddie skateboards and then shows him X. This gets Mark mad and he turns into one of his Superheroes. Unfortunatey, Freddie turns into Superfreddie. Pretty soon comic mark is shredded. Alice sends Ivanne to the old asylum to look for Ammanda's body. Meanwhile, she's pulled into dreamworld. She starts threatening Freddie about talking to Ammanda. Ivanne's found something ad is chiseling away. The wiley dream fighter Alice sends Freddie into a room with a hundred maniacs. Freddies parts get passed around to the glee of the maniacs and Alice. But Freddie's not done as Jacob's with Freddie in the church. Jacob flees frm Freddie on Escerian steps. He hides in Alice because he knows her so well. Soon Freddie emerges from Alice. Ivanne has broken through the wall and finds the corpse of Ammanda. She is freed from her Earthly bound. Jacob offers Freddie the chance to teach her. He pukes out the souls onto Freddie and the souls are released and yank Freddy into the womb of Ammanda who who must wrestle within her womb in hell. Jakob beams into Alice's womb. In the next scene Alice holds Jacob Daniel and everything looks fine, save for the slo-mo jumprope girls humming the Freddy song in the foreground.
