Romero's 1968 classic delivers on the promise of an up-to-date facsimilre of the original, and doesn't dissapoint some twenty years later. That so many zombie films have come and gone since Romero's trend-setter hasn't taken from the timeless conflict of the original story: a group that isn't at all a group forming one for survival. The tension of the yuppie woman, black businessnman, white spouse-abusing, drinking businessman-with-family makes perfect sense, and the twists on the individual fates shows Savini's familiarity with the subject, a sense for surprising in an exhausted genre, and a sense of frontier justice only the horror movie executes so consistently. As was the case in the first, not only modern social criticism, but the universal struggle for survival in total helpless isolation.</B></div> <bR> <div> <B><U>Plot Summary</U></B><B>: Barbara and evil older brother Johnny are off to visit the grave of their dead mother at Cemetary As they stand at the grave an old man stumbles toward them zombie sytyle. Johnny's fun ends when the man suddenly lunges toward them with a bleeding wound on his head, shouting "I'm sorry". As he leaves a real zombie springs out at them In the battle with the zombie, Johnny receives an incidental headbut, his sister stabs him through the hand with a flower stand, and he and the zombie fall on a gravestone deliveruing KJohnny a fatal head injury. Barbara rsticks the zombie again and rushes to her car and calls to a man for hel who likewise proves to be a zombie. With no keys, Barbara struggles unytil the first zombie breaks in the windsghiels, by releasing the emergency break, she is able to roll far enough to run before hittin a tree, and runs to a nearby farmhouse and finds the back door open. As she searches the house blood drops on her , before a hand and the a very fay zombie fall fronm thre second floor As two more zomcbies approach, Ben in a chevy pickup truchk pulls up running a zombie in the process. He tries to calm her and brings her back in the house. The man drod kicks a zombie and beats him out the door with a frying pan, finally running a crowbar through its head. As they struggle, the fat zombie sneaks up on Barbara and she beats it back yto death with a poker. THe guy says the things are two week to break in the doors but the windows. He goes to the door omnto the porch and destroys the two nearest zombies (one broken in half) with a crowbar to the head. The two humans bless themselves. Ben decides they'll stay there and hope help comes. His tank is nearly empty. Ben tells what he heard, that these are escaped prisoners or the result of a toxic spill, the men of even city, got drunk and armed to load the zombies in a truck, the zombies escaped and got them, (They throw out the fat zombie.)in arestaurant he saw how 7 or 8 including the woman beside him were shot incidentall, the cars blew up like in a war. He saw one shot thirty times until it get hit in the head. Destroying the head is the only way to stop this hell on earth. The phone is dead. They search for weapons, Barbara warns of the blood stain and the possibility of one upstairs. Ben finds a man with his arm eaten off and lies to Barbara that there is nothing up there before taking the dead farmer's shotgun. Suddenly young Tom Bittman and Harry Cooper break in. Harry's wife is in the cellar. Noone has a car, Harrys is broken up the street. Evan;'s city is five miles and its a battlefield. Toms uncle Reg has a locked gas pump. Tom arrived at the farm, and met Cooper, wife and injured daughter, then uncle Reg, who was dead arrived. The in the cellar/on the ground floor debate is interrupted by an approaching zombie.  Tom calls judy rose to join ben and Barbara in boarding the windows. Cooper declares them all for dead and heads down cellar and locks the door. Helen wants to know her husband's plan but Cooper just keeps drinking and yelling, while Sara's fever is growing worse. As Barbara peeks out a window, she notes how slow they are and that with the guns they could break through the zombies. The group manages to stay a window ahead of the zombies. Ben and Tom go to check the upstairs to get more doors, but unfortunately, Uncle Reg just renovated and the doors are like paper. On TV is only the Emergency Television Network. Tom Remembers that the old doors are in the cellar. As Cooper crows that his strategy is the right one, the upstairs people knock and want the doors. Cooper beats his wife when she tries to open the door.  Finally Cooper opens the door. Coooper tells them they're either in or out of the cellar. June threatens to throw them out if they want to fight. Tommy overrules her. Mother tells Ben that a zombie bit her in the arm. Ben tells Cooper to look for the jkey to the gas tank. Mother comes up to look for the key. As zombies hit a window and a door simultaneously  Tummy Ben and Barbara battle two zombies. Barbara shoots mr macgruder zombie in the head despite Junes protests. Barbara proves their not alive by shooting a naked bald one in three times brefore shooting it in the head. Cooper heads upstairs when he hears the TV which has only bad news.  Ozone hole, voodoo, chemical weapons, alien organisms, or so speculates a group of biologiste in Srtockton, Ca, that the dead are coming back. Center for disease contriol says rubbicsh, the church "Judgement Day. Cooper tries to steal the tv for his cellar, stuggles with ben and it brealks. Cooper calls baen a nigger. The struggle is enough for the rest, Barbara leads the party onto the porch where they try to find the keys on uncle reg while Barbara blasts the approaching zombies. June finds the keys and they retreat to the house.Tom and Ben and HJune break for the gas tank as ever more zombies gather on the porch. After a massive struggle ben falls out of the truck and Tom finds that they have the wrong key. When tom shoots the lock off the entire area explodes. The Coopers go into the cellar as Ben battles his waty back to the house. As helen arrives in the cellar sara sara bites her throat out. Cooper tries to get the gun from barbara and in the struggle a zombie pulls barbara to the windoew. and ben remains locked out. Cooper wastes all the bullits firing into the zombies. as Barbara lets Ben in A dead cop breaks in and as ben and barbara get his gun sara arrives and as ben attempts to shoot sara, cooper shoots ben. Barbara shoots sara, Cooper shoots ben again and ben shoots Cooper, cooper ben, and ben cooper. Ben stays injured and Barbara flees as the zombies freely enter the house Cooper crawls into the attic. Barbara walhjs through the zombies until she gags at a group eating the burnt friends. Mother is shot by Ben in the cellar.  Zombies eat people wslugs and mice. Ben listens to the radio, August 23, 1989, the reporter reports what ben has known for a day. Ben finds the key and goes nuts. Western Pa. Barbara finds a truck and is fired upon by rednecks. At dawn a helicopter arrives at the militia camp where rednecks tease zombies in pens, give interviews and hang zombies from trees while they barbeque. Barnbara notes that we are no better than the zombies. At the house the rednecks burn the last of the zombies and chainsaw the cellar door open. Zombie ben emerges and is shot as Barbara watches. Cooper enmerges alive and crows to barbara that she saved him.
