Critique: You'll have to be patient with the production values. Many scenes are so damn dark the viewer can't tell who's who. The scene at the church is a refreshing reminder of the roots of religious ideology: any scent of hypocrisy, and you're on Harry's scary list. Where the movie remains safely tongue in cheek, it nearly shines in its absurdity. Harry greeting the day to Christmas music, stuck in the chimney, the police line-up of Santas, and Harry's truly outstanding home-made Santa suit of odds and ends, which rivals the scene in "The Grinch". Also strangely appropriate is the surreal nonsequetor ending. Harry Claus addressing the children at the party and the parents' positive reaction to his threats is memorable. Most of the darkness of this depiction of Christmas, however, comes from exposure problems in the film. The effect is mostly a few dim glints shuffling around in the dark. Lose three skulls for that alone. Still, you couldn't hope for a more righteous Santa slasher, and since there are a sack of them, be forwarned that "Christmas Evil" and "Silent Night, Deadly Night" are the only decent ones.
Plot Summary: On Christmas Eve 1947, little Harry and Philly watch Santa deliver presents then argue whether it was Daddy. Harry, convinced it's Santa, peeks downstairs to see Santa performing oral sex on mommy. Harry goes upstairs and slits his hand with a shard of glass from a Christmas snow scene decoration. Now, in an appartment full of Christmas decorations, adult Harry gets up, lathers himself a Santa beard, and shaves to the tune of "Winter Wonderland". He cuts himself and has a flashback to his mother with Santa. He watches the neighbors children with binoculars to see if they're naughty or nice and goes to a book and makes an entry on little Moss Garcia: "Impure thoughts, negative body hygiene", and makes similar entries under the names of other children. In the Jolly Dream toy factory where Harry works, he has noticed a lack of commitment from the assembly line workers. They don't care about toys and they hate Christmas. Harry, now a manager, agrees to go back on the line for one night so a coworker can be with his family. While Harry puts plastic riders on motorcycles, "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" plays in the factory and Harry reflects on his colleagues' disdain dor Christmas and reinjures his hand absentmindedly. After his shift Harry peeks into the local bar "The Odd Couple" and sees his coworker bragging that schmuck Harry is working for him. Harry runs home and sings "You Better Watch Out" while he angrily crushes a doll. Harry spies on the other half of the Stadling family, his brother Phil, wife, and two children. The children go to bed and the parents have sex on the couch as Harry remembers his childhood trauma. Back at home, Harry calls brother Phil to tell him he can't make Thanksgiving dinner, then he dresses up like Santa. As he paints Santa's sled on his van he goes over his list of presents for the local kids. Moss Garcia wants a lifetime subscription to Penthouse, which coupled with his bad list of throwing rocks at dogs, using profane language etc. makes ole Harry Claus angry. Harry spies on the Garcias as Moss refuses to go out with his mother. Suddenly, Moss spots Harry in the bushes, but when he reports Harry, his mother smacks him and drags him off while Harry returns home to make toys. Harry drinks a bit too much at the Christmas party where he meets the ad man who thought up the toys for tots campaign at the factory, in which a very few toys are sent to very many children for bragging purposes. In a rage, Harry steals bags of toys from Jolly Dream's warehouse while the decadence of the party rages on. He dons his Santa suit and goes on his rounds, leaving presents at some houses, an angry drawing of Moss at the Garcia residence. Harry arrives at the hospital with a bag of presents where he is greeted coolly by the security guard until the staff sees his van full of presents. Off to midnight mass where a pair of worshipers harass him mercilessly until he massacres them with a toy soldiers rapier and an hatchet. While Harry Claus entertains at a family party, (where he is a hit despite his promise of "something horrible" for bad girls and boys) the police investigate the church. At his next stop, Harry becomes stuck in a chimney (for a minute or two) then he kills Frank. Back at Phil's house, Phil is convinced something is wrong with Harry, missing his second family holiday in a month. At the factory, he vents his frustration at the shoddy quality of the toys by turning on the assembly lines and letting the products fall to the floor ala Lucille Ball. Harry calls Phil in the middle of the night, and informs Phil he's figured out the tune, and everyone's going to dance to it. When Harry distributes toys to adoring neighborhood children the parents band together in a torch toting lynch mob much to the dismay of their children. The chase of the bloody Harry Claus leads to Willow East Springs Hospital for retarded Children through the town where the celebration of Christian spirit reaches its bloody climax.
