Critique: In this fake documentary, fake Doctor Frances B. Gross takes the viewer on an odyssey through the many manifestations of death and dying. Kubler Ross fans pay attention. The good doctor's fake beard is a nice touch, added to his fake name, an imperative he takes seriously - and his fake scientific digging around in the world of things getting killed on videotape. Hilarious philosophical attempts to portray puzzlement of the cruelty of the human condition while rolling clips of dying people and things for the entertainment of adolescent males. We wonder about how deep Gross' penetration into the essence of death is, since he, too, seems to have enjoyed his journey.
Plot Summary: Real people getting killed. We open with open heart surgery. Suddenly the heart slows and stops. Welcome to faces of death. We begin with a litany of desiccated corpses. No special effects here, only people being dismembered under scalpels. Open up a scull and we find a human brain. Dr. Gross leaves his surgery lamenting the limitations of modern medicine. Right. Pathologist Gross has compiled a great list of deaths. He has a recurring dream about a woman in a coffin. Since then he sought a deeper understanding of death. His obsession with death has taken him around the world. Some thought he was a distorted fanatic. We concurred. Dirt is thrown in our faces as though we are the newly deceased. The next face of death
We see some distorted mummified corpses. We see a Pitbull fight but the kill is not recorded. We get to see a snake consumed by piranha. Next we see a monkey blow-gunned to death. We seethe monkey rolled in a fire. Gross became intrigued by the Massai. They first consume the blood before bringing in the beast. We get to see a rooster fly around the barnyard with no head on. This is impressive to the urbanite. Cows throats are slit. The blood flows as he bored workers slit the throats of the struggling sheep. Next we are treated to a monkey being brought to waiting diners. The monkey struggles as it is secured screaming in the middle of the table it's head poking up. The men the begin beating its head and the monkey is dead, its brains If one can get closer to God by eating brains, why not? Harbor seals are surrounded and slaughtered. Dr. Gross offers that this provides a necessary input to the balance of nature, and necessary products like seal coats. We were less than convinced by Gross' claim that he would never again wear the skin f an animal o his back. Next we have an alligator hunt. A fifteen footer. The rangers go out to find him. A ranger is pulled into the water. The roll begins. We see little left of the ranger as the corpse is pulled from the Everglades. Next a routine assassination. Gross claims he got to meet the assassin involved in the murder we just witnessed. Next we see Mike Lawrence going berserk in 1973. A fire fight takes place in which a swat team surrounds a house firing into it. As we watch, tear gas is thrown into the house and as he runs out he is gunned down by the swat team. We are informed that the coroner's office is open 24 hours a day. Corpses are dismembered before the camera on the pathologist's table. Cadavers are injected with embalming fluids and preserved in temperatures of 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Gross next brings us to murderer's row. A graduate is taken to the final exam. A young man looks around for some way out as he is strapped into a chamber. We watch as the victim tries to hold his breath but soon he is coughing and then is still. Next an electrocution is shown. DeSilva is looking pretty nervous as he's brought down the hall. He struggles as he's brought to the electric chair. Gross continues to claim he is horrified. DeSilva's eyes dance around until tape is placed over them to prevent them from coming out of their sockets. We watch as his body jolts, saliva flowing from his body. He is not dead and he is jolted again for an extended time. The blood flows from his taped eyes and apparently he process is concluded. Next we see an execution in the Middle East. A man is beheaded. Next a San Francisco cult. A dead man lies on a slab. The cult members anoint a young man who lies dead. As we watch the cult members bite into the man's organs. Next we find some snake handlers. A woman jumps from a building. Cryogenics. Spelunking. Nice grizzly shot. As Gross notes, this was particularly ignorant. We get to see a man light himself on fire at a demonstration, etc.
