Critique: WARNING!: Portrayal of rape and discussion of childhood sexual abuse. Supposedly based on a true story based on an incident in LA in October 1976. A single mother, Jane Fonda look-alike and act-alike Barbara Hershey, who was a victim of childhood sexual abuse and oddly looks no older than her son, is raped by an invisible demon. The movie is fairly engrossing, but we are a bit uneasy about the claims--extrinsic to the movie itself--that this is a true story. It sets up a barrier from enjoying the story itself as a serviceable horror story, boasting professional acting and a good script, and excellent production values. It's fun to watch Schneider and the other doctors scoff at the parapsychologists as the predictable antipathy between the two groups is nicely played. Nice job of casting the ever enjoyable Alex Rocco as Jerry, the fiance, a real snook and Ron Silver as Schneiderman is likewise as strong as ever. Let's face the horror movie truth, 119 minutes is too long.
Plot Summary: Without warning, single mother Carla is attacked in her own bed and apparently raped by an unseen...entity--her eldest son Billy searches for the intruder but doesn't find anything. Later, objects begin to move on their own in her room. She mobilizes the family to rush out of the house. As they drive away, Billy has become pretty skeptical of his mother's fears. Carla moves to friend Cindy's house and reports she was raped. After a day on the beach they move back to the house. Even Billy and the kids hear something and Billy runs after it. All he finds is a pipe that makes noise when it moves: but what moved the pipe? Cindy comes over and tries to allay Carla's fears by sleeping in the bed with her. The next day on the way to work, the car is possessed and drives helter skelter through the city. Soon she has a meeting with Dr. Schneiderman. She explains about the rape and that she isn't sure what had happened. The psychological tests begin. Next she is attacked again in her bathroom. She goes to the doctor armed with a number of bruises. He prescribes tranquilizers. Carla admits that she did not have a normal childhood. She admits that her father held her in a way that a father shouldn't. Soon the family experiences it as Carla is attacked and Billy's wrist is broken. the doctors hypothesize that the relationship with Jerry--her first lover of her own age--has brought this on. Two little attackers and a big one--Schneider suggests that Carla is having fantasies about being attacked by her children. Carla rebels. Carla has decided to cooperate. She is left alone at Shirley's house, and before you know it, all the windows are broken and the place trashed--Shirley manages to see the last moments of the destruction, and she's on Carla's side. Checking out the occult section in a book store, she meets some psychic researchers who come to the house and experience some disturbances. They rush off to get their equipment. That night, there are electric shocks on the ceiling, but she senses it is weak, and decides it can't hurt her any more. The researchers recorded the electric discharge on camera. Schneiderman is not pleased about the researchers setting up shop in her room. The entity shows itself to the researchers--a star trek energy being type. Jerry's big homecoming was going just fine until he witnesses a rape and gets tossed around as well. That's it for him. The psychic researchers set up a model house and leave Carla on her own and prepare to freeze the entity with liquid hydrogen.
