Critique: This is an extreme psychopath movie, featuring an individual fully able to function in society with no sense of right and wrong. A bunch of people sitting or running down dimly lit corridors in the dark is a bad way to keep an audience awake. Did a pretty good job portraying the groups misdirection in trying to hunt down the killer and some of the bad leads work well, such as an effective hothead typology to throw us off the track. Ultimately, however, there is not enough information given as to the nature of the killer's psychosis. We are left wondering why these events happened. "The guy was nuts" just isn't sufficiently satisfying. The professional cool with which this killer go about the business of being a psychopath does provide some chills.
Plot Summary: A college boy runs into a condemned building to hide. Under the full moon he is strangled and stabbed. Tim wants Joanne to move into a new apartment but she doesn't think so. They go to the great party. Dayton Hall is 75 years old and is slated to be renovated for apartments while the old dorm is to be torn down. Tim is going on a ski-trip. Joanne Murray is employed by the University Co-op and manages 4 workers involved in cleaning old the old dorm before it is leveled. Debbie has to leave due to family trouble and can no longer help. She leaves early for Christmas. She goes to find Joanne an inventory list and while her parents wait out on the street until they can wait no longer . The father enters the dorm and is killed instantly by a maniac with a spiked baseball bat the mother is garroted out in the car, the daughter feint and the killer crushes her head with the car all three bodies are loaded into their Volvo and the killer drives off. Bill the maintenance man working over in Dayton Hall has had his drill stolen and is all upset. John Hemmit Bobby Lee Tremmill shows up to by a desk but scares Joanne with his threatening behavior. Patty takes school seriously. Greg convinces the professors he respects them Greg gets the better grades. Patti sees a face in the window and they decide it is the transient John Hemmit. One of the fellows goes looking for John to read him the riot act. They can't turn him up. They decide to settle things once and for all. Greg climbs up a fire escape to find him. Joannee is stuck in an elevator but Bill gets her out. Bobby Lee calls up Joanne and leaves his wife. A murderer kills Bill with the missing drill. Clint and Greg see John Hammett walking through the woods near the dorm. The hot headed Greg wants an extended confrontation but Greg councils that he got the message. They set up a fairly formal dinner but someone comes and steals the bread when no one is watching. Greg goes after the bread thief while Joanne goes to find Brian. While they are both away, the dinner table is completely destroyed. Brian and Joanne return to a ruined dinner table. Joanne thinks she hears something on the roof. Before they can call the police, the phone goes dead and the electricity goes out. Brian goes up to meet the girls on the way up Brian is attacked. While Greg is working on fixing the electricity there is a mysterious thud. Siin Patti is struggling and then dumped into a tub. Greg comes back without Patti. John Hemmett is seen walking with a metallic tool. They run in to John Hemmet in the hallway.v He asks her to trust him. There he sees the mutilated body of Brian. Hammet is slashed by Joanne who then follow s her all around the hallways. She continues to bludgeon him with various articles as he tells her to help him get her out of here. They finally subdue Hammett and it looks like things are all right but then the real killer reveals himself. The killer treats Joanne, his secret love, to a chambre des morts, excitedly describing all the murders to her. She gets away a few times, and tries various stratagems to keep him from doing a similar job on her. Like many psycho slashers, he is vulnerable to even transparent kindness from the virginal protagonist. The only hope lurking anywhere would appear to be the police who are very unaware of the situation and in any case convinced by the Hammet theory and possibly Bobby Lee unless he's the monster himself.
