Critique: This is low rent in a number of ways, but that is often forgivable. What is sad is that you will fear that you know the big "mystery" of what's going on at Steven's Sanatarium from almost the start, and you'll be right. You might get led into thinking something more is going on, but sadly, things just grind along. The main interest is who the nymphomaniac Allyson will decide to jump on next. Rosie Holtick's flaccid protagonist doesn't exactly make viewing this an electric experience. The tounguless Mrs. Coallingham said it best "oghh glugg sluggh Dggth".
Plot Summary: The "judge", one of the mental patients, kills Dr. Stephens during a rather experimental axe-therapy. That day, Jane, who had been threatened, and had decided to leave the institution is murdered by another patient who blames her of stealing her baby. The new nurse, Charlotte Beale, doesn't know what she's getting into. Geraldene masters has taken over as the only surviving therapist. Charlotte had heard about Stephens' unusual therapies (e.g., axe therapy?) Masters seems quite reluctant about taking her on. Masters intends to make some changes. When Beale admits her old hospital knew about her coming here, she decides to take her on, and the nurse is glad to stay. Masters says the Stephens method is not to help people reach normalcy, but rather to allow any obsessions to grow and assume the patient will overcome them on his own. Hmm. She is warned not to go rushing around alone. Oops-the general rule is no locks on the doors.Miss Kowingham keeps warning charlotte she must leave--but then, she is a raving lunatic. The phones are not working and Dr. Masters was asking Charlotte some pointed questions about who knew she was coming. Miss Kowlingham turns up with her tongue cut out. Those mental patients! Whatever it was she was trying to say is now gone. The telephone man shows up and finds one of the lines has been cut. Jennifer the nymphomaniac attacks Charlotte. Allyson spills the beans about who the real murderer is.
