Critique: A surprisingly strong doll movie which derives its freshness much in the way "Child's Play " (the first part) did--namely, by providing a plausible reason for dolls to go about wreaking havoc. The music, production values and pace generate a wonderfully seamless film. However, the mistrust doll movies engender is well founded. Sometimes the movie is an excuse for the dolls to kill people as if it were the producers who were possessed.(Puppet Master II, Child's Play 3. It works better when the dolls kill for a compelling reason (Child's Play I, Puppet Master I & III) and the return of an entombed evil is a time-honored tradition that works here too, particularly combined with the durable stubborn-scientist-motif. Also well done was the mistrust created between the parents. Wayne has dumped his whole livelihood into this project, and is not sympathetic to the suggestion that his product is possessed. With little violence and blood, and only one episode of excusable profanity, Dolly Dearest is suitable for any audience. The daughter is truly creepy--her possessed stares rival those of catatonic "Poltergeist" star Heather O'Rourke, mainly because Candy Hutson can (was required to) act. Bottoms has found his niche in the clay world of "The New Land of the Lost" Archaeology .as always, provides the air of the unknown, and the devil child and crypt were outstanding.
Plot Summary: An archeologist (Bob Laraby) gives his dig one more strike with his chisel and this releases an ancient force. The Wayne family arrives in Appalla Mexico. Jesse is promise a beautiful new doll. This doesn't soften the blow of being uprooted from their life in Los Angeles. Wayne's doll factory needs some sprucing up. The factory is adjacent a Mayan dig. An archeologist had been crushed there the week before. When Jesse goes to bed, it becomes evident that dolly is animate. Jesse is quite taken with dolly, but has been producing some disturbed drawings. A Mexican priest is blessing the house and this has a terrible effect on Jesse. The priest is bustled away. Jesse is also not pleased with the housekeeper. Jimmy pokes around at the site and picks up some plans. When Jesse curses at her in Sansia (those people's spirits had flown with the evil one) (Sansia occupied this area about 900 years ago -- Sansia means Satan on Earth. Camilla is out of there. Jesse's explanation is that she hates Gali. More peregrination from Dolly, and Camilla ends up locked out of the house. Going through the cellar to get back in turns out to be a bad decision. When the Waynes return, arrangements are made with Camilla's family regarding the accident. Jesse is still more withdrawn. Jimmy greets Laraby's colleague at the dig. That night he sneaks down to observe the excavation. There are warnings not to cross the threshold. Back at the factory, it appears all the dolls are animate. This doesn't bode well for Luis. A local attempts to destroy the dig, saying that the Sansia child has risen. When mother hears that the dig is Sansia, she decides she's had enough of dolly, but when she tries to take dolly away, Jesse Blairs out. Mr. Wayne, of course, sees only that mommy is cracking. The devil child had the body of a child and the head of a goat and was fed the blood of children. Marilyn goes to visit Camilla's sister at the convent. The sister tells her enough that she deduces the dolls will spread the word of the Satan child. Marilyn heads home to confront the mischievous doll.
