Critique: Although a bit uneven, there is plenty to look at in this traditional and engaging gory zombie movie. The zombies are of the brain-eating variety and are scary enough as they are, and helped along by Leonard's direction. Lawnmowerman-esque camera experiments are a particular strong point as are the high production values and moody colors. Although there are definitely lulls in the action, overall "The Dead Pit" has things to recommend it.
Plot Summary: At the state institution for the mentally ill, Colin has been experimenting. The inmates are acting up. Best to administer tranquilizers through the eye. A doctor follows a trail of blood. In the deepest cellar there are only rats and skull and a man who has been scored with hieroglyphs with the top of his head cut open. Colin has done life now he is doing death. His colleague suspecting such and has brought a gun. Years later some women are brought to the institution. A young woman amnistic seems quite sane except for her memory loss. And then just what this place needs--an Earthquake. Our amnistic does seem a bit off when she starts screaming that the people in the cellar need help. The earthquake stirs something up. Dr Swan suggests hypnotherapy. Jane Doe reports that someone cut open her head and stole her memories. We start hearing about the iso-ward. Then there is Chris who likes to blow things up. Someone seems to be keeping an eye on Jane. Her dreams are troubled by mad nurse Kyger. Jessica Robbins is taken by the observer who has cheap orange glowing eyes. Jane knows Jessica won't be coming back though she doesn't know why. One of the patients has an attack and he too talks of people's brains being cut into. Colin draws an attendant out into the woods and into one of the old abandoned buildings. We get the feeling that this won't be healthy for him--particularly once we see some of Colin's setups. Under hypnosis Jane "blairs out" after telling of her operation. Charles throws her out when she comes to and orders her put under thorazine and isolation. Jane knows Colin lurks about in the bell tower and she goes to seek him out. Jessica follows a giggling reanimated Nurse Robbins around the tower building. Soon Colin is striding after her catching up even though she is running. She awakens in a Nurse outfit strapped onto the table. As she lays there the tortured insane start to belch forth from the cellar below. The zombies file past her and up the stairs. It's a munch-out! Can Swan or the insane Nun stop the zombies with her Holy Water? The plan is to dump the insane-nun-blessed water tower on the pit. Chris is fortunately an munitions expert so he might pull it off.
