Critique: As Dr. Pavel noted: "This is cool! The first antipolitical correctness movie combines compelling social criticism with first-rate zomby/horror in a fitting allegory for Vietnam era US. The scientist at the beginning to whom noooone listens calls for no more false civilization, destroy the monsters. At the osame time, a call for responsibility:the swat team shoots the one cop who acts like rambo? On the other ghand: the scientist says they kill for food. For this reason, and diue to the second scene in which zombies and ghetto inhabitants are clearly indistinguishable, this film has caused endless debate. THe priest ibn the second scene makes the point for both sides, the way we are kikling ourselves, the dead will soon outniumber the living. The portrayal of the breakdown of the social contract is compelling. A stupid young cop with no real plan of escape tries to bum a cigarrette off the four dessertrers, they pretend not to have any. The devaluation of human life Steven's very male feelings of inadequacy contrasted by the swashbuckling SWAT men. Fran's pregnancy brings up the question of the responsibilty of procreation in a society literally tearing itself apart. The original plan to go to Canada reflects on the options of Viet Nam era. You won't even notice the length, so slick is the pace. The mall music blends beautifully with the grim business of gunning down zombies. Strong racial epithets at the beginning. Watch for Make-up effects king Tom Savini as the head of the biker gang and Richard France, the TV commentator as Dr. Watts in Romero's "Crazies" as the scientist.
Plot Summary: At a television station in Philadelphia chaos reins as the dead are returning to life and eating the living as a leading scientists insist we deastroy the brains of the dead. As scientists debate the situation, and SWAT teams fight a bloody and pieric battle to inforce martial law in a housing project incredibly full of both rebels and zombies. The radical priest informs the SWAT leaders thet the dead, a lot of them, have been stored in the cellar, an endless supply of zombies. Four (Two SWATS, a chopper pilot and his wife Fran) decide to leave via chopper to survive. Chopper pilot Steven, news producer Fran, SWAT team members and Peter fly in search of a safe haven. As they fly, they observe all manner of catastrophe, rednecks drinking beer and coffee and doughnuts provided by the red cross for any willing to help shoot zombies. When they stop to refuel they are set upon. They have to be careful where they go for fuel and provisions as the SWAT members particularly are deserters "bad guys and thieves". They stop at an abandoned shopping mall, which is also full of zombies wandering aimlessly. They come there where they went regularly as living humans. Safe in the third floor of the mall, the SWAT guys go into the mall turn on the muzac to cover their noise and turn on the power in case they need it. They are able to navigate the mall with minimal difficulty considering the slowness and stupidity of the zombies. Still, there are several tense situations where zombies find their way onto the third floor and a hare krischna nearly gets Fran, but in the end they overcome. Drinking whiskey and eating caviar, the splendid life of isolation turns out not to be that much fun. Fran is pregnant. Using trucks, Roger and Peter block off all the entrances to the mall. Roger's obsessive hatred for the zombies puts him in a bunch of close jams until finally they bite a chunk out of his arm and leg.
Steven and Peter loot the guns at the sporting goods store and the newly armed foursome (Roger in a wheelbarrow) test drive a new Scirrocco on a shooting spree through the mall and secure the second floor in a rout. They pile up the bodies from the secured area. The party begins as they finally reap the benefits of the abandoned mall. Pete says that his grandad used to say that when there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth. Makumba: voodoo. Roger is getting sicker. He tells Peter not to do kill him until he's sure he's coming back. He says he's going to try not to come back. On television they discuss some possibilities, among them, eating zombies and bombing the major cities. Peter sits in front of Roger's body and waits for him to rise. He is buried in the mall's indoor garden. Attempts to live like kings are a bit hollow. What's a diamond ring now? They idle away the hours playing poker for hundreds of dollars a hand. The television stations are off line. A biker gang views the proceedings in the mall. They arrive that night and begin the attack. Peter and Steve begin setting up defenses. The motorcycles start roaring through the mall. Unforthunatly, Steve gets angry about the looting and begins shooting. Steve is chased by bikers who shoot him in the arm. Peter, meanwhile, is methodically picking them off as the zombies shuffle toward the wounded. Steve's injury leaves him prey to the zombies. The zombies own the mall again. Zombie-Steven's memories of their refuge allows the zombies to invade. Peter decides to make a last stand.
