Critique: Instant coffee, Coca Cola, Nuclear Power, What next? Zombies? Man is to blame. There is no such thing as a toxic-zombie movie without social commentary. Dawn of the dead showed us a society tearing itself apart and City of the dead brings us the dangers of irresponsible use of technology. A nice pace, plenty of zombies, gore, flesh and decent acting give this one a slight edge over the hundreds of cheaper movies in its genre with the exception of the last minute, which is a cop-out. These Zombies are a lot faster on their feet than your garden variety and they use weapons to get what they want, blood! Director Lenzi is the point man of the Italian Cannibal/Zombie movie. His zombie movies take off on the social criticism of George A. Romero's "society ripping itself apart" theme whereas his cannibal movies simply portray cannibals ripping unwanted guests apart, albeit with the connotation that they deserve it. A brief glance at his characterizations of the eaten in "Make them Die Slowly" confirm his theory. In this sense, Lenzi is the true father of the "question Columbus Day" movement.
Plot Summary: The Department of Health has announced a spill at a nuclear power plant and there is some question as to the reaction of clean up crews and plant officials. A pilotless plane lands at the airport Professor Haggenmade and an army of zombies emerge from the plane and wipe out the lopolice and emergency crew gathered on the tarmac. The crew of Channel 5 news is on the scene for both stories. Coverage becomes a lot more convenient when the zombies make their way onto the set of a disco dance show at the station. Army Researchers conclude that these zombies, like so many toxic style zombies although clearly genetically superior, can be stopped by destroying their brains, otherwise they appear to be indestructible. As General Murchison and his men race against time to stop this army of mutants, the government complicates matters by insisting on keeping the public in the dark.
