Critique: Good production values. The pace is quite brisk. Roddy McDowell is pretty amusing but plays a very peripheral role. They do a good job of keeping it uncertain who the killer is until the very end. The various candidates for the killer are so convincing we are absolutely sure it is each one of them at various points in the film. Dwight is a classic hothead, and several others do an excellent job as well. The killer takes on a nice psycho slasher stride at the end. It's fairly amusing to see Martin Mull stumbling around in the swamp for the whole film. All this and Brad Pitt gets his head viced before he is summarily dispatched as if he weren't a big movie star, which, of course, he wasn't at the time.
Plot Summary: A murderous boy has been released from prison. Martin Mull (the DA) is off to hunt mallard and warns his daughter, no cutting class! As he slogs through the swamp, someone calls 'mr. district attorney, over here' and then pierces him with an arrow. Brian has been staring at Mull's daughter. Coleen says Paula likes him. Dwight suggests a party over her place. When Brian gives Paula a hotdog, Dwight is not pleased. Brian has been to a mental hospital. Dwight makes it clear that he's not interested in continuing the friendship. While Paula is doing some modeling for the art class, Brian was skulking in a corner and is forced to model as well. The principal, Mr. Dante... Someone appears to have something against the art teacher as he is pushed into the kiln and fired.
Someone, presumably Brian, knocks on Paula's door but remains hiding behind some bushes. Next thing, some kids show up with beer and ice cream. Paula has the key to the school and Dwight wants it to see the files. Although she's supposed to be responsible, she trades it for a ring. The group heads off for the school. The janitor, Schultz, is at the school as the kids sneak by. They look up Brian Woods' file. They think he's a cannibal. He is a violent schizophrenic. Brian watches from the window. He doesn't look pleased. The kids go out on a field trip and the teacher steps on Paula's father without noticing. Dwight is supposed to be a big basketball star but he stumbles around on court and gets in a fight. Coleen is pulled under the stands by what she thinks is an admirer and soon it looks bad for her. Schultz mops up a bloody mess. Brian continues to try to be freiends with Dwight but Dwight continues to push him away. Brian is brought before the assistant principal and is suspended. However, before the report can be copied, she is eliminated. Dwight and Paula go through the gym and have a rather strange run in with Schultz. Paula finds the assistant princpal dead on the copy machine. Dwight says Brian is the killerr and Brian runs away. Pretty soon a manhunt starts for Brian. Paula's father is still stumbling around in the swamp where the manhunt is, but no one sees him. Paula finds a recording of her father arguing before the jury that Brian should be put away for life. She searches through the transcript and notes that Brian had protected Dwight during the trial. As Paula washes her hair, Brian sneaks up behind her but claims he didn't kill anyone. As the evidence comes together, the three suspects are brought together for the grand finale. The sadistic math teacher is given a math problem by the killer that will decide whether they live or die. Naturally, he blunders.
