Critique: What kind of a murderer would put on skates and what would make the murderer think he had a chance to catch a world class skater on ice. Besides skates and motorcycles do not belong in horror movies. The Doll Motif is never developed and the monster mask coincidence is a bit farfetched. The timing of the murders is such that they are totally unprepared yet not at all surprising. This has to be considered a trick in itself. The plot, which is a sound formula for a horror movie becomes completely lost in the directors much too artistic vision and the plodding characterizations. Unfortunately, the one interesting element of the story, the question of whether Stryker and Samantha are up to another ruse, goes absolutely no where and would have made about as much sense as their original stunt. The masks we wear in daily life idea makes a fairly interesting comeback at the end. That combined with the scary mask gain the film an extra skull. Strong performances and a fine horror movie mood setting at the end (the junque in a veteran director's garage) can't help the meandering and end is too drawn out.
Plot Summary: Actress Samantha Sherwood rehearses a scene from "Audra" in which a woman scorned kills her lover with her Director Jonathan Stryker when he suddenly falls silent in the dark. Stryker and visit Dr. Arthur Pendelton where Samantha attempts to murder Stryker for saying her acting days are over due to her mental state. In a moment alone with Stryker clad in a straight jacket, Samantha bursts in to laughter at the success of their ruse. Samantha is institutionalized at a rather scary asylum where most of the patients are apparently being treated for evil laughter. After initial frequent visits, Stryker finally stops visiting Samantha as he is busy casting the part of Audra. When Samantha reads Variety she escapes and discusses her plan to get the part back at any cost meanwhile burning glossies of her competition. Stryker invites six women to his house for a weekend audition. Amanda dreams that she climbs out of her car on the drive to the audition to find the ugly doll she keeps in her room blocking her way. Someone runs her over in her own car as the doll holds her still. When she awakes, she is murdered by an intruder in a scary mask.
The other five actresses all arrive safely but wonder why all five have been invited. Veteran star Brook Parsons admits she'd kill for the part while DeMilo the musician admits she would have sex for it. Actresses centerfold Sanders, Christie Burns (skater), comedienne O'Connor would all be willing to do equally degrading acts for the part. Stryker and his menacing assistant Mathew promise two days like they have never known. Only one can play Audra but each will learn something about themselves and their craft. Bafflingly, Samantha Sherwood is introduced as the last contestant. Stryker asks her why she came and tells her she has no chance as Mathew frolics in the "casting" hot tub with Sanders. When Stryker leaves the crying figure skater in her bed, Samantha is watching. At her early morning skate she finds the ugly sad doll in the snow by the pond and the masked skates her down and sickles her head off. And then there were four, and Samantha whom Stryker degrades at the audition. She is forced to don the monster mask and attempt to seduce Stryker in front of the other four. This is followed by degrading auditions for all until Parsons discovers Christie's head in her toilet which is no longer there when Stryker investigates. All this turmoil does, however, enable Stryker to get into bed with her. Unfortunately for them however fortunate for the viewer they are both blown out the window after they dress and the final showdown and unmasking are on. The vehicles are disabled and handyman Mathew is floating in the hot tub with a knife in his back.
