Critique: When Anthea says Elizabeth has had a terrible time, she's not kidding. Although it is easy to see why Elizabeth doesn't like Africa, her constant chanting of "America! America!" is a bit trying after a while. The ending of this film is a huge letdown. The myth of the sea god was just fine as The interruption of the tribal ritual is truly horrifying as the socio-cultural insensitivity of the white women results in a deadly blunder. Henry Cele' is outstanding as Mletch Also the tension between the foreman and and Geoff is a compelling portrayal of the fine line they walk in their relationship with the tribe and the main employer in the community.. Fine production values and a fast pace particularly once the revenge begins had us truly engaged until the final showdown which is just silly and cost some skulls. Why would a sea god need a machete? The realism of the conflict suffers with the sudden introduction of the machete wielding sea monster. The acting is fine, Christopher Lee whose films are always worth than he, and Jennilee Harrison is effective as the ethnocentric American.
Plot Summary: A tribesman runs from a priest in ritual mask armed with a scythe-like sword. The priest announces to a mother, "Your son is
dead." East Africa 1950 Elizabeth Armstrong, a young pregnant American woman and her South African husband Geoff enjoy breakfast prepared by their African servant as the mother mourns nearby. Mletch, the foreman on Geoff's plantation makes Elizabeth uncomfortable. As the village mourns, they perform a sacrifice of a goat Cindy the girlfriend of Robert attempts to stop the sacrifice as she cannot bear the death of a goat. The Mianga throws his magic totem at the feet of the transgressor as Elizabeth shouts "American! America!" shouts the torpid Elizabeth. The witchdoctor curses her and announces the death of her baby as the unsensitive white party absconds with the sacrifice. While preparing dinner, Elizabeth experiences intense abdominal pains. Dr. Pearson (Christopher Lee) is summoned to treat her and cures her pains with a brown potion. The doctor finds a ceremonial staff leaning on the villa used to call moya amobi the avenging spirit who lives in the sea. The myanga can seek revenge on people with the staff by using it in a ritual killing. He adds the staff to his collection Meanwhile, ignorant Cindy relaxes on the beach and robert scares her by disguising himself as a seamonster-avenging witchdoctor. Robert then begins lampooning the magic of the Zulus, slashing open a watermelon. Elizabeth admits she took the goat and stops the ceremony. Both the doctor and her husband are horrified at her insensitivity. He knows there's trouble. The Nyanga had the boy killed himself and has become power crazy, cursing the boy for the careless loss of the cow. The workers are scared and will not work. Bwana accepts that this is a bad time but is critical of Mletch who is not as persuasive a foreman as was his father. Dr. Pearson shows the Witchdoctor the staff which elicits a warning. Cindy and Whitebread have sex on the beach when they are hacked to death by a machete wielder and are discovered by Jeff. He is suddenly in a life and death race through the sugar cane with the machete wielder close behind. He eludes him with a clever flashlight ruse. As Elizabeth makes herself pretty, a monster stalks her. She investigates the noises to find Geoff hanging in the walking refrigerator. Mletch arrives with his machete but Elizabeth refuses to leave with him until it's too late. Elizabeth tries to make her way to the neighbor's house, but the truck gets caught in a ditch. She hurries through the sugar cane hearing sounds of pursuit. In the neighbor's house the lights have gone out too. The little girl's boyfriend, Bruce Henderson, has told her that once the beast is in your dreams you can't hide because it's already in your head. Elizabeth makes it speechlessly to the neighbor's house. Meanwhile, doctor Pearson invokes the sea spirit. Something is snuffling around at the windows of the neighbor's house. The little girl goes out to say good night to the Rotweiler. Something besides the dog. is out there. There is a knocking at the door and neighbor Anthea pulls out a shot gun. Dr. Pearson finally arrives. Elizabeth is sure that Dr. Pearson is behind it when she sees he has a hurt wrist. She is sure that he hurt is wrist chasing her in the cane field. Pearson tells a story about his sister's having had a mixed race child and how his father had thrashed the man when he wanted to make a sacrifice over the child who died. Pearson's father was later killed horribly. Pearson thus has a healthy respect for the sacrifice tradition. Next thing the child has a machete poised over her. Aunt Thea rushes up and shoots someone or something. When they go to investigate all that's left is some slime and the smell of the sea and rotting flesh. Elizabeth throws a kerosene lamp into the cane and the cackling Nyanga is immolated. However, there is still a lurking presence in the cane and it is headed for a fiery showdown with Elizabeth.
