Critique: Good scary Mrs. Blake with her scar. Karen's raving is a bit hard to watch. After a pretty good beginning, they unaccountably resort to too many camp effects none of which work in the least. There are apparently food vampires and eating vampires. It is mildly interesting when Cindy explains how boring it is to be a vampire. Watch for Garret Morris' Bogart African Queen leaches imitation. Some mildly interesting variations on the vampire theme. All in all the town full of camp vampires schtick just doesn't need to be played again. The "blue velvet" stuff of podunk USA having a dark underbelly is not played particularly well.
Plot summary: Allburg, USA. A peaceful and unassuming township nestled in quiet woods. A fire and brimstone sermon insisting on repent is broadcast by megaphones. The broadcast van runs over Matty the bum, but he's okay. Cindy arrives in a visit to the Barrett's in Allburg. Mrs. Barrett has a collection of religious and perhaps pagan paraphernalia (a dragon with seven heads and ten horns). The girls bike off peppermint schnapps in hand. They arrive at a gothic revival empty church building. They pull out the flashlight and begin to search. Every kid who leaves Allburg must swim the crypt to wash the dirt of the town off, otherwise they'll be back. Lucy is apparently faced with her moment of truth. During the crypt swim they encounter the tomb of Daniel Jerome Cummins born Dec. 11, 1920 who was "taken suddenly and tragically" April 25, 1935. Cindy notes that he missed the killings here a few years later. When Lucy loses her crucifix it lands on a submerged forehead which suddenly springs to life with the touch. Cindy is pulled out of the water by a gigantian thing and soon blood cascades down her flanks. River junction: A small industrial town 50 miles south of Allburg. Mark reads to Jessica Blake from Milton about Lucifer seeking his revenge, viewing his pain-tormented followers. Mark hypothesizes that Milton got his monsters from murderers of the time. Mrs. Blake comes early and is angry that Jessica is hearing about such Godless fare. Father Frank comes complaining that something is wrong, that he'd had an affair with his brother's wife. Frank drinks a bit. Frank brings Mark Gardener upstairs and sees Cindy and her mother, Karen. They spend the day submerged under water in tubs in his attic. Frank feeds Cindy leaches. Karen has long fans and she feeds from Cindy's blood. Frank relates that Lucy Barrett's house is full of Vampires as well. Frank reads about a Rumanian priest who tortured hundreds of children and was found under water with a pulse. It's head was severed. Mark heads for Allburg. Lucy appears to be locked away in the attic as well. Mark finds that grandma Barrett's the vampire. They get away but unfortunately, they are stopped by a cop. After the cop raves on for a while, Lucy tries to convince the cop that her grandmother is odd and she doesn't want to go back. The ploy doesn't work and she's back in her mother's clutches. The cop is apparently grabbed by some other vampires. Father Frank reads to Karen from the bible. It doesn't seem to do much good. Mark watches through the window as things get housey and Lucy is about to be consumed. The peeping Tom kid tells them the officer......has been taken by some local towns people to the lodge. Mark is seduced into going in to see Karen and soon she's feeding away as Cindy watches. Nice effects as she vomits out a breathing organ and gets ready for the day. They go to the lodge and see a leach buffet and Vampires collecting young children. It turns out the peeping Tom is a very bad actor and relates that he's a familiar. "Zachir" the priest shows up but they escape. Just when things look bad, Matty shows up in the evangelist van and saves them. Matty says Father Vlado was a pederast and murdered a number of children and himself at the old church. Matty flooded the church himself. The story is interrupted by a vampire that is dispatched. Lucy is a virgin and the vampires can smell her. Cindy puts a stake in her mother's heart. Vlado Zachir starts calling to Lucy. Cindy shows up. She offers Lucy the chance to go to the church and get the monster. Matty and Tom set up the evangelist van so that it has its cross out front as a weapon. They load up with stakes and head to the church. Zachir looks like he has Lucy but Cindy intercedes. WHen Vlado dispatches her the children who have been freed from the bottom attack. Matty is pursued by red neck vampires and he molotovs them. Mark has his hands full with some others. The confrontation comes between Mark and Vlado, but it looks like a mismatch. Lucy puts the crucifix in his mouth and that stops him long enough for Matty to come through with the van and a light show-waxy finish.
