Critique: An expensive movie, with plenty of union personages and predictably decent results. Their ancestors sacrificed children to the leopards until their souls grew within them--to have sex is to be the leopard, to become human they must kill. Occasional cat-like movements by the two are interesting to watch, although not always quite consistent. Irene's leap into the tree at the zoo was surprising given how poorly she was running. Although it sometimes tries too hard to be art, like all horror movies even remotely linked to British rock stars (see "The Hunger", no don't!), with the attendant pace problems that lull the viewer into the sort of trance that can only be achieved by such pretentious offerings, the clips of the big cats are at least diverting. Overall, this is a moody business, which is occasionally intriguing. Impressive make-up and effects in the transformation scene, and of course, Frau Kinsky a real tiger in bed (joke). When "St. Elsewhere" boy gets his arm pulled off this no doubt fulfilled a number of unfulfilled wishes. It kind of made up for Wesley Crusher surviving "The Curse".
Plot Summary: In a blasted wasteland a group of leopard-clad aborigines tie a maiden to a tree. A panther stalks at dusk. When two women return in daylight, one of them enters the panther's den. New Orleans. Irene arrives at the airport where Paul recognizes her as his sister though they apparently haven't seen one another since she was four. He brings her back to his house where she meets Famali, the housekeeper. She has been at an orphanage. They have been dreaming about one another. There is a bad business about how their parents died. Paul shows her a collection of masks and other accouterments from a circus. It quickly becomes apparent that there is a forbidden attraction between the two, though Irene shies away. Paul leaps panther-like on the edge of Irene's bed as she sleeps and watches her. Meanwhile Ruthie, a hooker, arrives at a brothel and heads upstairs to turn a trick. She chats away without seeing the John, but then she puts her hand in some goo. Soon there's a panther's tail and a low growl. When the New Orleans zoo people arrive, the panther is still there in the room. The zoo guy heads upstairs with the tranquilizer. When the cat is hit, Irene suddenly sits bolt upright in bed, and she rushes to call for Paul. She hears that he's been called away and heads out instead to see the New Orleans sights. When she sees the zoo, though, she heads straight in where she is immediately drawn to the big cats. The panther is still agitated from its capture, while the keepers are talking about de-fanging and de-clawing it. The panther apparently had eaten a pizza, as that showed up in his vomit. Late at night, Irene is still outside the panther cage, sketching it. When Oliver the curator sees her, she runs off and suddenly leaps up into a tree. She has a fever, though she admits she's always had a weird metabolism. Hmm. After a few sparks fly between her and the corny curator, he offers her a job at the zoo working in the gift shop. Apparently Irene is a virgin. As she is sitting at a bar, a woman comes to her and says 'mirmana', which apparently means sister, and then scuttles away. As the panther is growling Irene is strangely drawn to it. It becomes very agitated and one of the keepers reaches in to electrically prod it. As Irene watches, the panther gets hold of his arm and things get extremely gory. When Oliver returns with a rifle, the black leopard is gone. When Irene gets back home Paul has returned, claiming he had been praying. He also says that she is ready, noting that she lusts after Oliver. He claims she is the only one who can sleep with him and he with her. Otherwise, they'll turn into panthers. Apparently in this family, sexual lust becomes blood lust. When he goes after her she leaps out the window away from him. When the cops come by, the dog barks and they become suspicious. They find something in the basement: remains of several people who had been fed to the panther. They surmise that it's a religious sect and that Paul handled the leopard. It comes out that Paul's parents worked in a carnival and blew their brains out and the cops haul in the housekeeper. Oliver and Irene continue to hit it off, which could be dangerous for him. Meanwhile, Paul, whose tastes run to the sleazy, is luring a blonde to her digs. After turning Oliver down, Irene takes a late night stroll in the nude involving panther views of the wild life. When she focuses on a rabbit, we can tell it's had it. It appears that she is starting to realize what's up. Paul, meanwhile, awakens naked in the bathroom. It appears that things didn't work out with the blonde. A manhunt doesn't come up with any panther. Paul eventually shows up at Irene's. He says making love with her will stop the killing. He tells her that their parents were brother and sister. She escapes by stabbing him in the arm. Alice and Oliver show up at Irene's just as Paul turns fully panther. When the autopsy ends with a smoking ruin, Oliver wonders just what's going on. Irene heads out of town. While Alice is in the pool for a quick dip, she gets a visit from the leopard, but it turns out it's just Irene. Funny that her shirt's shredded. When Irene shows up at Paul's place, it's pretty clear she means business, taking off her clothes as she heads up the stairs. Pretty soon there's another panther loose in New Orleans.
