Critique: Anyone who has the least dinosaur-Jones on her/him will be satisfied by the first half of this film. However, Roger Corman's epidemomania overcomes him once again, and a constrained dinosaur romp evolves into a wildly implausible apocalyptic mad scientist/evil agency conspiracy. Although mad scientists have traditionally caused great problems, and wiping out the human race via viral infection is a standard, the Rube-Golbergian idea that the fabrication of a retrovirus may impregnate all women with dinosaur fetuses doesn't cut it and the film could have lived nicely without it. On the other hand, Corman combines elements from Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with George A Romero's Crazies in a slick and cheap tribute to his own style (and nods to Romero and his legions in one line: "You've been watching too many Italian zombie flicks.")The initial scenes involving gruesome attacks by the fast growing Allosaur are as good as advertised, playing tongue in cheek with the youthful zeal of the environmentalists. "Securicam" technology, which brings us half the action, lends realism (as well as ingeniously masks flaws). Despite some highs and lows, the dinosaurs don't disappoint and certainly, Spielberg could learn a lesson about what kind of messy low-brow fun we could have had with his expensive dinosaurs. Note the emphasis on the bird-dinosaur connection in the naming of the characters. "Eunice" is also the name of the evil multi-national conglomerate in Brain Dead. Watch for underrated former child actor, and Ron Howard-brother Clint as Friar.
Plot Summary: Top government scientists wonder who is now funding the brilliant geneticist Dr. Tiptree, the very dangerous "fairy godmother of military biotech". Her sponsors from the multi-industry giant "Eunice" explain that they regrettably cannot interfere with her research without forfeiting the resulting patents. Tiptree meanwhile is watching workers on Securicam, who, on a routine check of the chicken coop, find their chickens mauled. After something fast and dangerous leaps out of a very large egg, Tiptree gets the report that "it" still hasn't been found. Just as the Eunice plant closes for the night, a chicken truck drives off. The driver notices some carnage among his chickens, stops to investigate, opens the door, and he is ripped apart. Meanwhile, Doc, a drunken night watchman and medical school dropout, chases off some anti-Eunice environmentalists with his assault rifle. The protestors disable a tractor and intend to chain themselves to it in order to prevent further destruction of a fossil-rich site which was once an important dinosaur migration highway. Doc apprehends one of the activists, an attractive blonde woman named Thrush. Meanwhile, the driver has been found. The sheriff suggests a bobcat got him, but the coroner, Dr. Raymond, reports something strange about the corpse. When Doc awakens, Thrush has disappeared. Dr. Raymond and the sheriff go to the leftist camp, but Doc decides not to finger the intruder, who later pays him a visit to thank him. She repeats her anger over the destruction of an important dinosaur migration route. Some kids go out joyriding, make a pit stop, and are ripped apart by an Allosaur. An analysis of the attacker's saliva indicates it was a chicken, which baffles the coroner. As Doc drives Thrush home, they come upon one of the joy riders, who is bleeding to death. He moans in Spanish about something eating him. Two Eunice men track down the now sizable Allosaur, but their dart guns don't have sufficient effect. Back at Eunice, the spin doctors are busy concealing their dinosaur problem until a key senator can vote for Eunice preservatives. A dangerous researcher is fed to a T-Rex by Eunice henchmen. Back at the dig, Doc tells the chained activists to watch out for bobcats, however, an Allosaur soon arrives to devour everyone but Thrush. The coroner notes that the m.o. is consistent, but each victim shows deeper wounds: "either there's more than one, or it's growing." At Doc's pad, Thrush is forced to turn a rifle on one of her dino-friends, which bursts through a window. Doc brings a dead colleague to Eunice, pretending it's the apprehended Allosaur and gains access to Dr. Tiptree, whom he interviews at gunpoint. Doc, like most townspeople, has a fever from Tiptree's synthetic virus. Meanwhile, the sheriff tries to cook eggs but gets only green goop and finally a baby dinosaur which triples its size in a few hours. An obnoxious chicken farmer has his head bit off at the chicken farm. Tiptree explains to her secretary Susan, who lays down to give birth, that she is evolving genetically. Susan explodes and produces an egg. Soldiers in safe-suits are sent out to stop anyone from breaking the quarantined areas, inside which 70% of the inhabitants are infected. Tiptree expose her master plan to return this dying planet to the dinosaurs: "I don't want to end the world, just one unruly species." The sheriff stops the Allosaur with shotgun blasts to the throat and head, but not before it runs a claw through his back. Although half the humans could be wiped out in six months, Eunice has an artificial womb program that could repopulate the females quickly. Threatening to destroy the eggs, Doc coerces Tiptree into giving him the virus so that he can create an anti-virus. As he heads for the virus storage chamber, Tiptree releases her ravenous T-Rex, which Doc eludes long enough to return to Thrush, who lies on her deathbed. At 79% infection rate, the town is sealed off. Doc tests his anti-serum on Thrush. At the same time, soldiers at the field hospital begin shooting all the patients. At 92 %. and counting, Doc and Thrush stop the T-rex with a bobcat tractor and rush off with the anecdote.
