Critique: Ah Italia! Great food, fast cars, and gory horror movies. This one ranks right up there for realistic gore and another hallmark of Italian gorefests, the relationship with the much older woman or incest. The breastfeeding and masturbation scenes in this one are reminiscent of that in "Burial Ground" (Andrea Bianchi 1979). Joe d'Aamato has crafted a disgusting (the nerves of the fresh kill in the furnace are a new angle), yet, like many of its ilk, oddly compelling story around the standbys of guts, grave robbing, necrophilia, and a relationship with incestuous overtones. Why it's hard to look away from these films remains to be explained, but this film evokes the same morbid fascination that did "Burial Ground". Who gets buried alive anyway? We wouldn't want to ruin the surprise. Does it all make sense? Not really. Does it matter? Not much when your covered with goose flesh. Despite the preponderance of guts and mutilation, there are scenes in this movie that remind you of the original intention of horror movies, to raise the hair on your neck. Interesting how the modern Italians, like the English and the Americans since the Romantic period like to keep their horror in Germany or Tirol. What's going on there? In case you have never seen an Italian horror movie before, the music is once again performed by Dario Argento's house band, the Goblins who are to Italian/American gore festivals what Huey Lewis and the News are to San Francisco sporting events. Not bad for a European porno film director, hiding behind Joe D'Amato is Aristede Massaccesi. Some guts rumored to be real.
Plot Summary: An old woman performs a voodoo/image magic ritual bringing about difficulty breathing in a beautiful young woman, Anna, in a private hospital. Meanwhile two young men are delivering boxes in a van to a laboratory where a baboon lies on the operating table. The drugged Baboon is given an injection. The woman who sought the help of the voodoo priestess it turns out is Iris the servant of the young woman's lover, Frank. He arrives at the hospital in time for one final kiss before she flatlines. Back at home the much older Iris, obviously pleased that only she remains to care for young Frank, comforts him by offering her breast which he sucks like a baby. At x's wake, Frank secretly gives her an injection, but a funeral home worker spots him from a distance. Anna V”kl is buried on a hillside. Anna's parents leave quickly but her sister Ellena will be staying on to finish school. That night Frank hurries back and exhumes the body of his beloved and whisks her off in his weird red van. Unfortunately, he suffers a flat tire and a pushy woman with a dubbed cockney accent jumps in and proceeds to roll a joint, yakking endlessly. Once in the laboratory, Frank removes Anna's internal organs (not for the squeamish) and gobbles up her heart. He then runs a hose up her nose and pumps her brain into a beaker. As he does this the stoned hitcher awakens and walks into the lab shocked on the way by a stuffed baboon she witnesses Frank inserting taxidermist's eyes into Anna. During an elongated scuffle, Frank uses pliers to remove her finger nails before finally suffocating her and loading her into the van. Shockingly, Iris arrives and helps him dress Anna and apply nail polish. The next day, Frank's friend tries to arrange the sale of the baboon, the mortuary worker who paid for the diversion, sneaks into the lab, finds blood and Anna's locket that she wore at her funeral. When the guests leave, Iris chops up the hitcher with a cleaver while frank fills a bathtub with acid(Salzs„ure) to destroy the flesh. After dumping the leftovers in the yard, they sit down to a weird looking meal which Iris eats like a wolf, Frank vomits. While Frank sits at the bedside of stuffed Anna, Iris enters and comforts him by fondling him. Mr. Cale's detective reports that Frank Weiler, orphaned nine years ago was left a fortune after his parents' car accident. At the same time Frank meets an injured jogger and brings the young woman home, where he applies ointment and an ace bandage to her shapely ankle, whereupon they disrobe and fall into bed - with Anna! When the jogger notices this, she bites Franks hand in an attempt to escape, which so enrages him that he bites her throat out. Once again Iris appears from nowhere and helps load the body into the crematorium. She thinks now would be the right time to get rid of Anna too. Frank promises anything, even marriage under the condition that Anna stays. Iris agrees. The next day, police come looking for the jogger. As they tour the house, Iris spots a red running shoe on the floor and speeds up the tour. As Iris' family toast her May 1, marriage to Frank, the sickly looking groom runs upstairs to talk with the even more pallid Anna to whom he declares his eternal love. As he leaves for his jog the next day, Cale enters his house. Iris is for once not at her station - she's plastered downstairs. After a brief search, Cale finds Anna in a closet and photographs her. Iris insists that Frank dump Anna, he pounds on her screaming "Get out of here you old slut." As Frank entertains a nude young woman upstairs, Iris greets Anna's sister at the door. As she sits in the parlor, the lights go out and she hears the mournful cries of her sister "Elenor, You shouldn't have come here." Her discovery of her sister's preserved body by the light of her Bic and the simultaneous arrival of Cale provide justification a gruesomely memorable finale.
