Critique: Amazingly, this never becomes so silly that it isn't scary. The cellar wall of Dr. West's apartment has a mausoleum chamber on the other side. Did you ever have a convenient place where you just let things pile up irresponsibly, and never really disposed of them properly. Wait 'til you see what's in the mausoleum! This movie, if not quite as tight as Re-Animator, does a better job pushing the Frankenstein motif. West wears his hubris in the tradition of Prometheus, Faust and Frankenstein; he takes credit for everything, begins every sentence with I, and can't help but try everything, regardless of the consequences.
Plot Summary: Eight Months after the last massacre these guys caused at Miskatonic University Hospital in Arkham, MA, (there's always something happening at H.P. Lovecraft's fale alma mater!) Drs. Herbert West and Dan Cain finish their tour as volunteer medics in a bloody civil war where they have found a key element for their experiments into the nature of life and death. They continue their research on the location of the will at Miskatonic to support their theory that consciousness resides in every part of the body. Lieutenant Lesley cannot let the case of the massacre go. His wife, a permanent resident of the University Hospital, is herself a pathetic victim of reanimation. The case is officially reopened when Dr. Hills' head turns up 8 months after the massacre at a carnival side show near Arkham, remarkably well preserved, as are all the specimens from the massacre. On his visit to Miskatonic, Lt. Lesley learns that more than just Hills' head has turned up missing from the morgue. Who would want to steal body parts? Who else? By extracting fresh amniotic fluid from an Iguana, Dr. Herbert West produces the primordial ooze from which life originates. Dr. Dan Cain decides that this is nothing more than morbid doodling with body parts but is brought back into the coven when Herbert proposes to create a new life beginning with his deceased fiance Meg's heart which he produces from the refrigerator. Looking every bit the mad scientist, West declares,"This is no longer just about reanimation. We will create new life!" When Dr. Graves, in charge of the massacre leftovers, reanimates Dr. Hill's head, the stage is set for part II of the academic showdown. Meg is also reanimated, but in the tradition of Bride of Frankenstein, (only much better) one could have envisioned better results. Hill is grafted to a bat, and flies around (reminiscent of the 3 Stooges' short) once again directing zombies and the mayhem picks up where Re-Animator left off.
