Critique: In the Henenlotter tradition, a cheap tongue in cheek gore film with some decent moments and a likable cast, but this one doesn't have the charm of Basket Cases 1 & 3. Aylmer's cool accent and learned patience are funny elements and the cool trippin' music is a success. On the other hand, the love scene is one of the most tepid since "Blue Lagoon". The obvious drug addiction allegory works fine but it isn't long before the viewer wonders where this can go. There is a nice Henenlotter self-citation in the subway scene when a stranger reads the "Post" headline "Killers Loose in City" as the basket case brother and basket take a seat across from Brian. The hotel too is very reminiscent of "Basket Case". Also note that the Morton's neighbor is played by the same actress who played the neighbor in Basket Case. This has the same kind of cheap off the wall charm that "Basket Case" has, but without the coherent story line and psychological motivation, the similarities end there. The ending is brainless.
Plot Summary: Dr. Morris and his wife Martha pick up 12 brains not as large as they would have liked but the wife thinks "He'll love them!" anyway. Mother garnishes the puny and overpriced brains and brings a serving to Aylmer (the all inspiring famous one) when she stops in her tracks and screams. The bathtub which had been Aylmer's home is empty. As the distraught Ma and Pa sack their house in search of Aylmer the phone rings for sleeping Brian. When his girlfriend Barbara arrives to pick him up Brian looks and feels awful his head is spinning and he is so dizzy he can't stand up. Brian's brother Mike takes her to the concert in his stead. The Mortons lie on the floor foaming at the mouth in withdrawal. Brian awakes to find his bed full of blood and an opening at the base of his skull. Suddenly he experiences a kind of hallucinogenic trip. When he finally recovers he senses a presence in the bathroom and discovers it is in his shirt. Aylmer welcomes him to his new life full of colors. Aylmer promises he'll show Brian the light again if he takes him for a walk. Aylmer is hungry. Aylmer promises to do all the thinking, "Just put me on the back of your neck...trust me." Aylmer is a bluish worm;like parasite which injects a bluish chemical into Brian's brain. Brian runs through the streets of the city discovering the true beauty of the junque yard where a security guard attempts to arrest him but Aylmer chews right through the front of his skull, devouring his brain which Brian doesn't seem to mind, he just wants to be juiced again. Brian stops working and spends all his time in the bathtub, never answers the phone and his brother and girlfriend have had it with him and his giggling. On their date that night Brian tells Barbara that he's been going through some changes sand now sees things differently. He can hear the sounds of colors. Barbara thinks he's on drugs but he can't explain as Aylmer will not allow him to. He runs out on their dinner when he sees his meatballs turn to brains. On the way home Elmer gives Brian a shot of the juice and they head into a punk dance bar where he meets a punk girl but Aylmer gets her before Brian does. As Brian recovers in an alley doctor Morris calls him a fool for feeding him human brains and making him stronger. "It takes years to control him! He'll drain you 'til you waste away". The Aylmer it seems was brought to the west after the fourth crusade and the sack of Byzantium where in 1203 it was snatched from the Emperor Lexius. Venice, Spain, Africa, Berlin. Morton wants it back. They check into the sunshine motel a dive where Brian wants to get some things straight. Aylmer explains that the blood in Brian's underwear is from the girls brains he sucked out. He also informs him of the security guard,. Brian insists that he is in control and there will be no more killing. Aylmer can wait. No brains no juice. As Brian goes cold turkey he experiences the most dreadful hallucinations of his brains running out his ear and his ear falling off. When he finally cracks Aylmer insist on being fed first. As Brian showers Aylmer steals into a bathroom stall and dines on derelict brain. Meanwhile, sleazy brother Mike is seducing Barbara but Brian is in his room listening. He tells the cheating lovers they have to get away from him and one brain's as good as the next but Barbara follows him down to the subway and onto a car where she pleads him to get help. As she and Brian kiss Aylmer goes out his mouth into hers and eats her brains. In the sane alley, Dr. Morton corners Brian with a gun, and a final showdown for the possession of Aylmer ensues.
