Critique: Why do cops have to wear such clunky shoes? Why does James the teenager wear such clunky shoes? Maybe it's the shoes that give this movie its clunky pace. As the movie proceeds none too sure-footedly, it becomes clear that in spite of the incredibly threatening resources at its disposal, PRI's security consists of one fat slow male nurse. The snaggle toothed brain is not an impressive effect, it's silly and depressing. Longish social commentary on the dangers of believing what one sees on television. Statistics, however, show that even the most popular televangelist with more money than PRI winds up and jail and that only comparatively few lost and lonely retirees believe what they hear on TV.
Plot Summary: A gigantic brain/octopus sits in a vat. Meanwhile at WKSE Channel 9, Dr. Anthony Beril Blake, huckster/psychologist director of the Psychological; Research Institute is on television doing his show "Independent Thinking" the #1 show in the greater metropolitan Meadowville area giving solutions to the psychological problems that people face today. Becky, a young woman's room starts to act up. Her teddy bear bleeds tears, and then monstrous arms break through the walls. The room closes in on her but then subsides. It appears to all have been in her mind. But then in comes her mother and she is stabbed by Becky and strangled by a pseudopod. The Pseudopod pushes Becky out the window. It is added to the string of murders and suicides occurring regularly in Meadowville. James Majeluski is an intelligent teenaged prankster considered a discipline problem. The school principal, Mr. Woods, has a meeting with anti-social Jim due to his antisocial behavior. Mrs. Chisolm has a video of Doctor Blake who they say has had some terrific results. Mother: "Dr. Blake wouldn't be on TV if he weren't so good". Jim and Janet make out and she tells him. Their friend Becky had some problems and went to doctor Blake and of the "weird stuff" that's going on. James arrives at the center the next day and sees a madman who says that the aliens are taking over and that Dr. Blake is one. An attendant comes in and does a checkup on him. She places brain wave receiver-transmitters on his head. Unbeknownst to him, James is hooked up to a giant brain in the next room. Dr. Blake shows up and tells him to clear his mind and watch the monitor. The attendant Vivian is shown holding an apple. Blake says it's a baseball. In the next room, a huge brain in a vat is transmitting something to James. The attendant is shown topless and then a monster approaches. James leaves very skeptical of the procedures. The female assistant comments that rejection causes hallucination. There have been eight deaths since they began transmitting its brain emissions comments the attendant. They have been transmitting something during the TV show as well. Blake chastises her. The brain doesn't like this and gobbles her up as the others watch. Blake comments, that's food for thought. a toothy face emerges from the brain. Driving home, appendages start appearing from his dashboard and James has hallucinations of the monster that he saw during the session. He spins out of control but survives the crash. He stumbles bleeding into the diner where Janet works. James is left alone and starts hallucinating blood and pseudopods. The cop comes in and for some reason they hide the fact that he's there. When they go in to check on Jim, he's fighting off pseudopods that only he can see. One of the attendants from PRI shows up, sedates him and carries him off. The attendant shows a release form that his parents had signed. He wakes up in a room and the madman shows up. The madman says that he'll take James' place and James sneaks out. We are treated to Blake talking at length to the toothy head, describing their evil plan. James is seen and a chase ensues. Meanwhile, his friends have broken into the installation to further confuse the mix. Somehow, the protagonists bump into each other. Unfortunately, Willy is devoured by the monstrous toothy brain. James and Janet get away in their pickup, but officer Marx stops them saying there's an APB out on them. The attendant comes by and when Marx has his back turned Marx is beheaded. The monster brain is continuing to send out emissions during Blake's show. He beseeches James to turn himself in before he kills again. He also insists that wives tell their husbands to come and watch the show. James and Janet watch a wife give her husband one last chance to watch the show and when he refuses, the laughing wife cuts him in half with a chain saw. They sneak into the high school and James goes to cut off his handcuffs. Foolishly, they split up to accomplish their tasks. Janet immediately goes to call her father who is a fan of "Independent Thinking". However, she doesn't tell him where she is. The brain is still able to induce hallucinations in James as he wakes just before its slathering jaws close on him. Janet makes the critical error of watching Dr. Blake's show regarding James the killer and believes every word. Now it's James against the world and unfortunately James doesn't run very well for a high school senior. Fortunately, he finds a vehicle for the big chase with the cop. Having ditched the cops, James heads for the institute where he intends to kill the brain and Dr. Blake only to find the bulk of Meadowvale in a zombie like state filtering into the Institute. Among them is his mother, who points him out to the crowd and the chase resumes to the showdown with Blake and the crummy monstrous brain.
