Critique: (See: "Blood Diner") Absolutely blistering pace, unconceivably bad acting, and attrociuos writing, whether partially intentional or not, are just the right touches. There is no time to be bored in this one, the blood is flowing again before you can be distracted. Thesyle of blood flow is quite unique to this film, leaning to rivulets rather than pools. The slow beat on the Bongos and drunken violins are also absolutely perfect. Pete is about fifty and his girlfriend Suzette is maybe 17. Pretty cheap production values, crummy acting and writing blend together for a delicious camp mix. As in so many things, when something is done for the first time, there is a freshness that is hard to attain by remakes. Ironic that the film is from Manson International. Jackie Kong pays weak tribute to Herrschel Gordon-Lewis' "Blood Feast" and unintentionally reminds us of its strongpoints, by changing the Egyptian Caterer to Lumerian Diner owners and the goddess' name from "Ishtar" to "Sheetar" in Blood Diner (1987). Get it? Likewise, his Cheerleader Connie is named after "Feast" star Connie Mason.
Plot Summary: The radio reports a young girl has been found mutilated in the park. Soon, another woman is mutilated in her bath. Her eye and leg romoved. 7 young girls brutally killed in 2 wks. No clues in the cases. "Looks like one of those long hard ones" Hmm. Fuad Ramses-exotic catering. An authentic Egyptian feast is being set up. The spooky Fuad hypnotizes Mrs. Dorothy Fremont. The date is set aofor Suzette's birthday. Arranged in the form of the 5000 year old feast for the Goddess. Fuad limps off to get things ready. In the back room stands a statue of Ishtar. The newspaper rreports: "Legs Cut Off!" The police stiffly discuss their quandry further. A couple out on the beach engage in mating negoriations and poor acting. Fuad shows up to stop the procedings. Fuad comes away with some brain. Tony is injured and can't describe the killer, only able to blubber abaout a shadow. Mr. and Mrs Franklin don't know who would have wanted to kill Margie. A book clup list shows up again. A connection? Apparently, it is dangereous for a young woman to be readiang. It is 1963. The stew is coming along nicely. Fuad observes a young woman with a drunken sailor. When the sailor moves off, Fuad shows up and goes for a little tongue. Suzette is off to her class on the cults of the Egyptian Gods. The lecture is on Ishtar, the bloodthirsty Goddess of the veiled darkness. Egyptian and Assyrian Goddess of love and beauty. The spring festival corresponds to the waxing aof the Nile. On the eve of the feast, the priestesses were slaughtered on the altar, organs and limbs removed and served to the people. (Abolished by Amon Hotep) There are whispered to be contemporrary followiers. Pete the detective is at the lecture with Suzette, but doesn't see any connection with the cases he's working on. They get a few words from Janet Blake, whose face was hacked up. Something about wild eyes of an old man "for Ishtar". Detective Pete Thorn remains baffled. Someone's name no doubt, he muses. Sounds familar, but no dice. This scene is brilliant. Fuad gets another request for "Ancient Wired Religious Rites". He calls Trudy Sanders (the next priestess) She's at the Fremonts. The girls lounge around the pool while Fuad skulks in the background. Trudy heads home from the pool but Fuad knocks her senseless and heads off with her to his lair. Young women in book clubs really shouldn't be off by themselves. Pete calls to say he'll be late for dinner. When he hears it'll be an Ishtar style feast, he thinks it sounds like fun. Fuad whips Trudy, scoring her back while insisting that she give herself up to the Goddess. Her blood runs into a pot. Slowly, Pete starts to wonder abaout the party. the professor reports that Fuad wrote "Ancient Wierd Religious Rites". They head off to Ramses Catering. By the looks of what's going in the pot, it looks like Trudy may make it to the party in a sense after all. At the party, cocktails are served and one of the guests is blabbing away, tying up the phone. Fuad asks Suzette to accompany him to the kitchen. He brings her to the garage to have her bless the feast, telling her to lie back on the kitchen table. After some reluctance, she gives in. Perhaps the high point in the movie is Pete going over his thought processes that led to his cracking of the case. Watch Fuad outdistance the police in spite of having a pronounced limp.
