Critique: This is most decidedly a period piece. The portrayal of homosexuals, for instance is decidedly seventies. There are a number of errors, such as vampire shadow casting. There is little innovation on the traditional vampire story. The traditional love connection is fairly plausible, as it is quite believable that Tina would fall for William Marshall.
Plot Summary: Transylvania, Castle Dracula. 1780. A black ambassador prince comes to Transylvania to stop the slave trade. For such effrontery, Dracula makes him a vampire and locks him in a coffin forever starved for blood. Hundreds of years later, some gay American antique dealers make a killing by buying the antiques from the Dracula castle. As they look over their booty in a warehouse in America, one of the dealer cuts himself and they indulge in a gay squeal of feigned horror. When they open up an old coffin, however, the horror is not feigned because Blacula is one very hungry vampire. At the wake, Dr. Thomas finds it odd that there's so little blood in Bobby's system. A wake visitor is followed, and in the Dracula tradition, Blacula sees that she has the face of his lost love, Ruva. When Tina runs away from this madman, she loses her bag. Blacula is hit by a taxi and loses her. Juanita soon finds out that it's not a good idea to run over a vampire. Gordon checks out the cab driver woman and is concerned that the body has the same puncture and blood loss. The white detective suggests Panther activity, which Thomas as unlikely. Blacula shows up with the pocket book and introduces himself as "Mamawalde". Mamawalde drinks champagne! It looks like Bobby's corpse has disappeared. The ephotographer from the party is surprised to find that the photos she took of the big guy don't show him at all. Soon she's not just developing photos but puncture wounds as well. Mamawalde explains to his lost love reincarnated how he became a vampire, and she falls for him. Dr. Thomas who has been reading up on vampires digs up one of the antique dealers and the blue corpse attacks. Thomas is fortunately ready with a stake. They decide to prove to the others what's going on by thawing Juanita, the cabby. Sam the morgue attendant pulls her out to thaw, but leaves the door unlocked. Next thing you know she flies out at old Sam. That's a scary scene. Showing her the cross and the sun do her in. Later, Thomas goes to look into the missing photographer. He finds the missing Mamawalde photos. He goes to Tina's place to save her, and Mamawaldi flees, disposing of a cop on the way. The search for the coffin ensues. They get a break when Bobby is found picking up a victim at a gay bar. He is followed to a warehouse, and it appears that the vampires have indeed multiplied geometrically. The vampires there don't like molotov cocktails any more than they do stakes or sunlight. A good Vietnam era agitated crowd starts to congregate with the cops near the warehouse. Tina, who was supposed to lure Blacula goes somnambulant when he calls to her. The cops pick her up and follow her to Blacula's lair. Tina is shot by a cop and Blacula must vamp her to save her. But when the cops find the coffin they open it and stab without looking and it turns out to be Tina. When he sees she's dead, he goes out into the sun for a waxy disintegration.
