Critique: The image of Jason constantly fashioning crude coffins in the yard is nice and the acting is above average, but that's not going to hold your attention for 88 minutes. It doesn't help to throw in 20 shots of Jason's blood pumping machine instead of interjecting some real action here and there in the absence of a good story. The sex scenes, particularly the psychodelic modern art parts tale place in a black room in which very little can be seen or understood. What we do see is yelling screaming and hedonistic laughter, all of which are none too convincing. The laughter and smoke get more than a little boring after a while and the erotic scenes are incredibly strained on top of incomprehensible. It seems to us amazing that the filmmakers didn't opt for better sex and better death scenes once they realized the movie wasn't going anywhere. The empty lion's den typology and the stultifying repetition of the lion,s head art work door knocker etc. detract more than they add. Similarly, the garden statue of Pan seems sadly out of place at this very 70's warehouse of gloom.
The showdown is surprisingly easy until a strange change of mood and direction turn the brother and sister into plodding catatonic living dead as the whole plot boils down into a high school writing surprise ending, cheap zombie music, flashing black and white photography, and all.
Plot Summary: As a young couple have sex in the candle-lit black room, two figures creep up on them and chloroform them, draining their bodies of blood in a laboratory and throwing them in a subterranean dumpster then making out in the woods. Meanwhile mother of two entertains her husband Larry, a stationery salesman in her room. Larry looking for a room finds an ad for one in the hollywood hills mansion complete with exotic room and panoramic view for only $200.00. The eerily quiet young landlord, Jason who loves Vivaldi, shows him the room full of candles ad tells him there are no restrictions as his mate looks on through a two-way mirror. Call in advance and he'll light the candles and put out the wine. Larry picks up an attractive and sexually aggressive hitchhiker and agrees to go "as far as she wants". Lisa and Larry head for his black room and as they have sex the creepers photograph them. Larry meets Jason's sister and hears to his disappointment that his student friend can't meet him today. She explains that Jason has suffered all his life from a rare blood disease, Thallucemia which afflicts mostly Mediterranean types and requires him to completely replenish his blood every two weeks. As Larry and she have exotic painted sex, Jason photographs. Jason and x then hold a giggling photo shoot. Soon thereafter, Larry brings a prostitute named Sandy to his lair, where he blindfolds her and binds her. Suddenly his beeper calls him to an appointment for a half hour, leaving her helpless. When Larry returns, she is gone, actually in the lab where her blood is being pumped into Jason. Wife comments that since Larry has begun fantasizing about his black room, their love life has been much more interesting and they make love on the beach. While grocery shopping, she finds the ad for the room and notices the key. That night Robin says she wants to be his whore, not his wife. Jason meanwhile is getting progressively weaker. Noting this Bridget begs him that whatever happens, "Not Larry". While Bridget attends to one of Jason's attacks, anemic Sandy finds the strength to get up and stumble away but they sedate her just as a passing man in a truck finds her. They drain her completely and store her blood in bottles. then bury her in a box in the yard. Soon Robin has copies of the keys made and heads for the hills to investigate and is horrified to find that the place is real and the people too. She meets Jason who advises her to make his game hers - she has the key! The idea of her bringing in "fresh blood appeals to him, and he wants them to make love, which they do. When they finish Larry calls to have the room set up and Jason offers her the opportunity to observe her husband. This time Linda's boyfriend Terry comes along to observe. As Jason photographs, Linda weeps "It's wrong!". Still, she picks up Terry and takes him to the room where Jason has secretly invited Larry to watch. After a big fight at home, Linda goes out for the evening, leaving Larry with the kids. Terry and Lisa meanwhile are drugged in the black room and drained as Robin drives up. Bridget puts some of their special wine in the room explains to Robin that Jason is sick and how he needs fresh blood from a donor not old hospital blood and the younger the donor the better. His dream is to use children. Larry hires a sitter Millie and drives to the mansion where he is immediately chloroformed. Bridget and Jason fight over draining Larry as it becomes clear Jason considers his sister his wife and he asks her to come with him when he dies. Millie is summoned to bring the kids to the mansion by Bridget and when Millie witnesses a transfusion, Jason drags her to the lab.
When Robin and Larry realize the danger their family is in, its up to them to battle.
