Critique: This is a self conscious throw-back to fifties style creature movie, including a cautioning voice over in the beginning, and punctuated by social commentary uncovering the hypocrisy behind an anti-smut drive when a nuclear dump right next door is poisoning the environment. The one-eyed, extra slimy alien-style monster is actually quite good. How often can you say that? Why make the movie in the first place, though? You've got to bring some freshness to the idea. What was good enough for the fifties just isn't enough any more. Pretty good production values, though the acting is absolutely atrocious as Lutz gives one of the worst performances we have seen. Dry wit. The last scenes are incredibly slow, as the amazingly uncharismatic Lutz faces down the monster in a dark warehouse. This would have been a lot more interesting if we cared about Lutz at all. It may have been safer to keep Lori safely out of danger, but this didn't do much for the film.
Plot Summary: Pottsville, Idaho, the spud capital of the USA is expecting yet another stormfront on Easter Sunday. An outer limits--fifties style voice over informs us that several people are missing, among them a child and that the ultimate terror has taken form. We cut to a young man running across some abandoned pits and into an automobile cemetery. He hops in a car and seems to have gotten away until a snarling, slippery thing grabs at him and eventually pulls his head off. Later, police produce a report on the abandoned car, finding no driver. Detective Lutz chats stiffly with some of the mechanics. Another turns his back on a car while the trunk rises behind him. Lutz doesn't seem to notice a green slime around the abandoned car. Dudley pulls in a Mexican for fishing without a license. Lutz watches a report in which Doctor of Chemistry Garson Jones does some fancy footwork to argue that there isn't much radiation in the ground water, pouring water into a glass and drinking it, and showing that more radiation emanates from his wrist watch than from the water. The point is that dumping nuclear waste into the aquifer doesn't harm the water supply. Meanwhile, kids show up at the drive-in for some petting. On screen a woman is ripped up while our friends begin their activities. However, slime starts to ooze from the dash board before a monster rips them apart and moves on to kill a redneck. Lutz is called to a disturbance at the drive-in and gets covered with green slime when he climbs into the car. He returns home to find his bed full of jiggling slime and the monster underneath. With the monster right on his heels he behind a speeding train and ditches the monster. Reports of more missing persons don't hinder the joy of the church Easter egg hunt where toddler Amy finds the big prize, inches from a baby monster. In a meeting with the mayor and Dr. Jones While Mrs. Lane campaigns against smut in Pottsville, Dr. Jones thumps his bible in an attempt to paint pornography as the most immanent threat to the town. Lutz picks up his girlfriend after work for safety. At the local witches house, the boys throw shit at her window. After stopping an attractive motorist, overzealous officer Dudley is run through by the monster and is missing. 900 millirads of radiation is found in slime. Dr. Jones however scores a propaganda touchdown by camping at the dumpsite while he conducts routine tests filmed by a newscrew. Lutz dreams of the monster killing Jones and he watches helplessly from the helicopter. The mayor's wife floats by telling him "It's all in your mind buoy". He awakes late to pick up his girlfriend but when they open her car door the monster leaps in. They take refuge in the restaurant where the monster follows them they are able to capture it in the walk-in refrigerator but when the mayor arrives, the creature has disappeared. Garson calls to say that Lutz should meet him at the dump. Some anti-smuttists go into an abandoned building to look for evidence of smut. The creature gives them a welcome. Mike's mother, Marge Smith, is out in the street looking for Michael. At the mayor's house, during a recital of "Beautiful Dreamer", the mayor sneaks off to the garage for a nip. When the creature shows up, he drives right through the wall. His wife goes out to investigate and she screams with a cheap Laugh-in note. Lutz and Lori arrive at the dump, and they find the slime-evidence of the creature along with some remains of officer Dudley. After they wait around for a while in the creature's lair, the creature attacks, getting hold of Jones. Foolishly, they get into a car, as we know cars are the creature's favorite hide outs. Luckily, the creature is suddenly weak and they escape easily. Lutz locks Lori into a cage at the police station so that she won't come along and risk being killed. Lutz and professor Jones head off to confront the monster. An officer mentions Marge has been acting strangely since her son disappeared at the disposal site. Lori goes out to comfort Marge and follows her home. When Lori sees green slime at Marge's house, she tries to warn her away, but Marge just says it's some of Michael's. Jones says that it's a mutation due to the exposure to radiation. He admits his design is faulty. The creature is on their pick-up truck.and they leap out of it. Lutz shoots the gas tank causing the car to explode, and it seems their problems may be over. Or are they? In the climax, Garson and Lutz face the monster in a ware house.
