Plot Summary: A switch is thrown in the laboratory on 666 Benevolent St. of Edward Pretorius and his assistant, Crawford Tillinghast. A fish-like being snakes though the air, and then it attacks, gashing Crawford's face. He runs to Pretorius with the news. The new program driving the resonator is working. Pretorius is drunk with the effect. The machine is now running itself--'something's coming', says Pretorius. We see Crawford runinng out and being stopped by the police who were called about the disturbance. Pretorius is found with his head pulled off. Crawford is up for the murder of Pretorius. He is a physicist at Miskatonic university with a brilliant record. Crawford explains to a psychologist, Catherine McMichaels, who is to assess his case that there are creatures from a different strata of reality around us all the time, but we can't see them and they can't see us without the influence of the vibrations. . Crawford explains that the the pineal gland is a dormant sensory organ. Descartes considered it a third eye. The experiments proved the theory. The vibrations generated by the resonator allow the strata of reality to come together locally. Crawford destroyed the Resonator, Pretorius' invention. It came. It ate him. It bit off his head like a ginger bread man. Crawford is pulled away. McMichaels wants a catscan done on Crawford. Crawford resists having machines used on him. His screaming at the very idea of machines indicates that his career as a scientist is in trouble. It does look as though his pineal gland is enlarged. Perhaps it was stimulated. McMichaels wants to recreate the experiment. The others think he is nothing more than a paranoid schizophrenic. Crawford resists going back to the lab, but she gives him no choice, its either the lab or the rest of his life in the looney bin. Sergeant Bubba joins them. He used to play pro football. They find video tapes of Pretorius engaged in S&M activities. They enter the lab and see the chalk outline of Pretorius' headless body. Tillinghast wants to finish destroying the machine. All he did was know off the resonating fork the first time. Pretorius had brought women and ate fine meals. But the five senses weren't enough for him any more. Crawford jury rigs the device. Crawford urges them not to move. The creatures will sense movement. If it appears he will cut the power. A switch is thrown and the room pulses with power. McMichaels is affected. And then fish like creatures appear. The sareamt moves and they attack. As he is about to turn off the field, something appears. It's Pretorius. "I saw you die'. Not die, just pass beyond. Pretorius says he is the master here. He has complete molecular control. And an attitude. Crawford touches him, and he begins dissolving before their eyes. The sergeant shoots, and the creature explodes into something else. Crawford turns off the machine. That will be enough of that. Pretorius has become the thing that ate him. McMichaels theorizes that schizophrenics have enlarged pineal glands. McMichaels notes that the sergeant's sexual excitement is also correlated. McMichaels reveals that her father died in an institution. The resonator could be the cure for schizophrenia. McMichaels is becoming a mad scientist as well. Their ranks are changing. Conveniently, the machine now works via an on-off switch. McMichaels turns it on. Both she and Crawford are turned on as well. Pretorius appears, globbier than the last time. He grabs McMichaels. Sexual molestation? Pretorius looks as though he's about to bite McMichaels' head off. The sergeant manages to throw the circuit breaker, and the creatures disappear. McMichaels theorizes that the presence of others in the process creates a distraction. She wants to experiment with the resonator in isolation. The sergeant notes that McMichaels is acting like a junkie. She needs another fix. Next thing you know, McMichaels has donned the S&M leathers and is caressing the traumatized Crawford, and engages in a sexual situations. The sergeant is almost drawn into a situation himself. Pretorius is then attempting to start the resonator from beyond. The air is thick with bugs. They descend on the sergeant, and he is soon eaten alive. Pretorius' pineal gland is now snaking far out of his head. Crawford's pineal gland breaks out as well. McMichaels destroys the machine. Crawford is now in the hospital, his pineal gland snakes in and out of his forehead. Dr. Block, who always resented McMichaels, sets McMichaels up for electroshock "therapy". But Crawford is up again, his head enlarged, a sore where his pineal gland may protrude. Block finds Crawford eating brains stored in one of the supply rooms. Block's brain is alive, and Crawford finds that still more attractive. McMichaels escapes the electroshock procedure. An orderly further feeds Crawford's new found cerebral tastes. McMichaels returns to 666 Benevolent. Just when it looks as though she will further feed his intellectual tastes, she bites off his pineal gland. She'll know Edward, how pathetic you are, how you can't make love. Come and get me, eunuch. McMichaels escapes the chains Crawford put her in by luring the fish-creatures. It looks as though Crawford's gone beyond as his headless corpse is found at the foot of the stairs. But Crawford then emerges from the gooey body of Pretorius. McMichaels sets a bomb and attempts to escape and destroy Edward at once, leaping out the window as the laboratory explodes.
