Critique: A film maker's cabin retreat is not what it seems. In a hidden room, a deformed, retarded monster lurks. The quiet of the cabin is broken by a band of Manson-like punks who come to prey on them, and in the process release the fury of the creature hidden in the walls. Some of the cheesy special effects are of course intentional--after all, Orville is a maker of B-movies, and the house is covered with rubber masks. However, we hoped to see some difference between the real monster and the fakes--sadly, they were just indistinguishable. Pitiful acting. One wonders what the director said to the punks to get them to act so attrociously. No one would do that on his own. We wondered if this was meant to be tongue in cheek--apparently so, but then we wondered why such a decision had been made. The result is an extremely irritating film. As usual, Linda Blair gets involved with a true low budget fiasco, and plods through it in a workmanlike fashion. There are a few moments of suspense when the punks first arrive, wondering who will survive, but these issues get decided with blundering alacrity, and then we are left to plod through the monster revenge scenes, and even worse, the ensuing investigation which is one of the fifteen minutes ever filmed.
Plot Summary: A woman is old and withered, and is approached by a rubber faced goul. It comes and drinks blood from ther throat. It's a film, reviewed by a cheesy producer, complimenting his director. The director is heading off to the mountains for a vacation. Lisa chats with a young friend over drinks. They head up to the mountains as well--it looks like Lisa is the daughter of the director. Just then a VW van is full of punks who want to pass them. They get yeled at as the punks pass them. Lisa and Kathy stop in on Mr. Fullton's store, and he warns them about the punks who stopped in. Mr. Fullton will be by for fishing tomorrow. The punks' van has broken down. They talk about robbing a big hollywood type's house. Horror film fodder. They get stopped by the punks in the road, and then slowly drive through them. They arrive at the house, and mother is there to greet Lisa. By the music and camerawork, someone is upstairs that they don't know about. Lisa is concerned about a "Patrick"--mother says he has good and bad days. Hmm. A thick individual is breathing in a labored way and is heading up the stairs. He turns the knob to Kathy's room, and it is someone in a cheap rubber suit. It's dad, trying out a new monster. He is gratified that he scared her a bit. Kathy breaks out a cigarette at the table. Krueger mentions that she is bucking the odds by doing so--we agreed. The girls check out some of the masks from Orvilee's movies. Kathy feels sure she knows the difference between illusion and reality. A moment later, in comes a ruber faced monster on mommy, but again it's daddy. All this was a home movie. The girls go to bed as a thunderstorm starts up. It seems a real goul may be prowling around outside. One more trick--Kathy finds a fake arm in her bed. The prowler finds the doors and windows locked, but climbs a latter and the next thing we know, the punks have got the girls and the parents. The girls are preparing a manson style evening. Orville seems to be about to be raped by one of the girls. He is soon bludgeoned by her, and is presumably dead. During the proceedings, a masked observer peers through a gap in the wall. They want money, and are ready to start on mother next. The punks huff and gloat and in the midst of it, Kathy and Lisa escape. Unfortunately, Kathy runs into mother who has had her throat torn out, presumably by one of the punks. She is soon tracked down by a punk who wants to rape her but is stopped by a punkette who then proceeds to stab Kathy again and again. The punks have caught Lisa again and The punkette comes after Lisa with a knife, but she jumps out a window and manages to shamble out into the snow, pursed by a punk saying "here I come, bitch" over and over. As one of the punkettes is looking for money in the special effects room, she is "taken" by one of the punks, but she soon reciprocates. She puts on a mask to enhance the effect. The punks find a hidden room, hoping to find treasure. What they find is a childish room, and in there a monstously strong deformed, hunch backed lunatic. She quickly kills two punks. He finds his father has been killed and begins hunting the others down. In the moonlight, he shambles around after the punks who have now split up. Donna and the foolishly cackling, premature ejaculating Gibbs hide out by a fire. The monster quickly disposes of Gibbs, but Donna tries to soothe him by talking about Santa claus. It doesn't work as she too is crushed. Lisa seems to have run all night long, as the next scene is in daylight, and she is still closely pursed by one of the punks. The head punk and punkette are armed with a knife and a pistol. She goes on about they're being real pople while everyone else is phony, but thankfully that comes to an end. The snow seems not to have accumulated where Lisa has gotten to now, while it was at least six inches earlier. Lisa is finally run down by by a punk, but the creature comes and crushes him. He may have gotten there a moment late. Fullton comes tooling along in hes roadster and pulls up to the house. He comes in on a house strewn with dead bodies. Rod shows up at the house, and gets the bad news. After some bad acting, a possie forms up in hunting garb and they head out after the perpetrators. The word is no unnecessary shooting, but that doesn't seem likely. The creature has sighted the two punks and begins stalking them. The hunters come on lisa and the crushed punk lying next to her. They find she is still alive. The creature attacks the two punks but is shot a number of times by the male punk. The shots alert the possee who come and find the creature strangling one of the punks and he is shot by one of the posse, and the punk claims the creature killed the family. Lisa lies close to death (a dangerous blood clot) as Scratch is interrogated by Sheriff Bill who plays the bad cop, and deputy Blane who plays the good cop. Next Shelly is investigated. Bill plays good cop this time. Lisa dies on the surgeon's table. Rod explains that the creature had been raised by the family, but the cops have no evidence that the punks did it. Rod rents two surgical tables. He apparently has plans for Scratch and Shelly. Rod shows up at a junkyard, and finds Charlie, who gives him something, presumably a gun. It's been 48 hours at the big bear police station, and they're let free for lack of evidence. Rod is outside waiting for them. He pulls a gun on them and forces them to get in the car. They arrive at the house, and in Patrick's room there are two surgical tables. When they are strapped in, he tells them Patrick was his son. He shows them that he looks as bad as Patrick. He has a knife and performs a little surgery on them so that they are as deformed as he is, and they live on happily ever after.
Scratch: It's a scummy world, and it's better to be king than pauper.
